6x47 23" barrel

What kind of velocity can a Guy expect out of a 23" barrel with 95 grain bullets? Thinking about a deer rifle build
Thanks in advance
Chris

My accuracy load is H4350 with 105's at 3030 in a 22" barrel.

You should see another 125 or so with 95's in 23".

6x47L or 6x47R?

One is based off the 6.5x47 Lapua the other us based off the 222 Rem Mag. 2 very different animals, with very different velocities.

My 6x47L gets 2970 fps with 105 grain hybrid pills. Expect to be in the 3000 range with 95 grain bullets and med charges.

Chris,
The 6X47L is a really great little cartridge and will make you a fine Deer Cartridge. When we say "Deer Cartridge", there are so many different methods of hunting Deer that its hard to say one cartridge or another is just right for all types of hunting. For example, if you are hunting the long bean fields in South Carolina and expect to shoot at 400 to 700 yds, another combination my be better. If you are stalking and jump shooting, you might want to consider yet another cartridge. For still hunting out of a tree Stand or Box Stand and shot are 400 yds (or so) and under, you will be hard pressed to find a better cartridge... All of my Deer hunting is out of Box Stands and shot are usually under 400 yds and for me its the perfect combination. I've been using the 87 Gr. Berger vld and couldn't ask for a better combination.....Hope that helps a little....George

I will let you know here shortly, I recently bought a defiance deviant and am having the barrel re-fitted to the defiance which will after cutting off the threads and making new ones net me 23". The barrel is a bartlein 1-8 heavy palma and at 24" was getting 3090fps with a 105 hybrid with 39.5 grains of H-4350. I would assume a loss of 20-40 fps would be expected per inch.

Re: 6x47 23" barrell

NCVarhtr, what load are you using with your 87s I have been shooting 95s and I'm switching to 87s

I'm using Varget. Start around 36 Grs. and work up . I'm seating .015 off the lands in a 22" barrel. Velocity is around 3170 fps with the 87 Gr. vld.. I tried H-4350 and it shot well but Varget grouped much better..Some guys have found VV 540 to group even better with considerably higher velocity but I try to stay with "Stable" powders when I can. YMMV..... George

If you run the ballistic charts on the bullets he's mentioning you can get a little better of a hunting rig with the 6x47, the 87s and 95s will shoot flatter (faster) than say the 123s and 130s out of the 6.5 and not really give up much wind deflection.

The barrel life is shorter on a 6x47 though it's not a bad burner though definitely not the great life that is the 6.5x47 but for a hunting rig that may see 50ish rounds a season, the 6 makes better sense.

Good round, but any reason why you would not just use the 6.5 version?
I have had a 6.5 for about six months and a 6 for just a couple weeks. Most of the shooting I do is at 100 yards on paper because that is the distance of the range that I am a member. Beyond that I shoot some tactical long range and varmints.

The differences I have noticed so far-

6.5 has more recoil. Not a lot but definitely noticeable. I am shooting 123's in the 6.5 and 105's in the 6.

Both are about the same accuracy wise so far. Out of the box with some basic starting loads they shot under 1/2". I have shot multiple 3-shot groups with the 6.5 that are under 1/4" at 100, off of a bipod with a rear bag using 123 SMK and 120 AMAX. Up until recently, finding bullets has been my limitation.

Edit to add: My 6 has a 24" barrel but I have not had a chance to chrono yet due to snow on the ground at the range. It should be melted in a couple weeks and I will post some results.

The 6.5 will be used for longer range matches, etc. while the 6 will be used for varmint hunting, and my wife and son can shoot it.

Both are sweet calibers but if I could only pick one then it would probably be the 6 because it will do what I need. Funny thing is that my gunsmith tried to talk me into the 6 when I first approached him about building the 6.5.
