6x45or 6x47?? which to build??

Hi guys. Looking for your input on a new coyote barrel for the savage. Wanting something different. What are your thoughts on these two calibers? I've read a bunch of posts. Seems like guys are happy with both. Going to be a Shilen tube around 22" Have the brass for both available and tons of 6mm pills. Just can't make up my mind. Any deciding factors you could bring to light would be great. Thanks dcl

I just built a 6x45 and I am very impressed by the accuracy of this little cartridge. So far everything I have tried in it has shot well. I designed my reamer with zero freebore to shoot 55-75 grain bullets, but have only shot up to 65 grain bullets so far. The best powder I've tried has been AA2200, it really put the speed in this round. At least in my rifle, their advertised velocities are right on the money. I put this rifle together with a Stiller action, Lilja 12 twist Remington Varmint weight barrel and HS Precision stock. The main reason I went with the 6x45 for this project was the availability of Lapua brass.

Might wont to try CFE223 too.
Seems to shoot real good and the brass looks like it not been fired.
I'm using it with 70 SMK's.

6x45 is a cool round,I have a couple, but the 6XC is more cool. Barrel life on the 6x45 will be forever, well better than a 223 anyways.

I have a 6x47 and love it It is a 221 FB and 6x47mm That I got built by LPR gunsmithing...It is great cartridge for coyote and groundhogs

I have both. I use the 6x45 with lighter grain bullets -upto the 60gr - and use the 6x47 for the heavies 105. The 6x45 will have a longer barrel life and less recoil.

I built my 6x45 on a Savage action in 2011. Its the same one I have in all my coyote pics here.
VERY accurate to 700 yds. Just lays out coyotes to 600 with ease.
Drops Antelope w/ease as well to 300 yds....(not like they are hard to kill)
Simple to load for & great cartridge.
The only 6x47 I would build is the one off the .222 mag case (6x47 remington), just cause I like that one.

Well I guess it's hard to beat the 6x223 round. 5spd, I've been following your yote shooting posts on here and sure like the results you posts. I was thinking the 6x222mag round might have more speed available. I also was looking into the 6x204 round but looks like dies and reamer availability might be an issue. I doubt that there is any difference in the 6-47 and the 6 - 204. I have formed 204 case from the 222 mag. cases because I had the 222 mag. cases and could not find 204 cases at the time. I can load for both and can tell you the 6 47 has more velocity, but if your looking for more velocity the 243 would be a better choice. Both rounds have preformed well for me, but when I`m looking for a 600 yrds. shot I much prefer a 6 - 284.

I'm in the middle of a 6x47 build.

I initially thought 6x45 since I have a ton of brass, but my 'smith had a 6x47 reamer, so there it was. 8)

I'm looking forward to getting it finished.

Pretty sure it's going to be a 6x47. Sounds like a little more speed. And it's just different enough. Looking at a 10 twist. 60-75 grainers at max velocity. Should be an awesome medium range yote shooter. Thanks for all the help. dcl

If your only going up to the 75's a 12 twist will be enough & should give you SLIGHTLY more velocity over a like 10 twist. However, a 10 twist will get you into the deer hunting weight bullets if you ever wanted to go that route.

I'll give another vote for the 6x45 also (223 brass is virtually free). If velocity is what your after go with a 6x47L, creedmore, or straight 243. Even the 6BR will easily trump the speeds of the 2 cartridges mentioned (& does a number on coyotes BTW).

No brass forming,the 6x45 is really simple anyways, and more case capacity.

The 222 Rem Mag brass is hard to find. I think you only have Rem to choose from. You could form 204 brass to the 6X47 and you have more brands to choose from that way.

I went with a 6tcu aka 6x45AI so I get better velocity than the 6x47 Remington and I still have the cheap brass options or lapua brass if I so choose.

Own two 6X45's, one AR15 and one bolt gun. outstanding accuracy and brass availability. I shoot 70SBK w/ AA2495. Last year there was an article in the Hodgdon Annual Manual about a new cartridge called the 6mm-204 Ruger, which is basically the same as the 6X47, good article and included load data, but they are just trying to reinvent the wheel.. Either decision will be a good one.. Aim small, miss small
