6x45 length

I don’t know if I’m posting this in the right place. I’ve wanted a 6x45 for a while and finally purchased one. I’m probably never gonna shoot suppressed. It is 24 inches but I want shorter. I want a handy platform and thinking about making it 20 inches. Not really worried about velocity just don’t want a big report. That’s one of the things that drew me to the caliber. I would like to hear from folks that have experience with this. Thank you in advance.

24 will really give you optimum velocity and the least noise. I have a 20 in an AR and a 24 bolt. Both 8 twist. They love the 75 gr Sierras and just got a decent group with an 80 TTSX for deer. Figured out you have to jump those a mile or so. Have fun, great cartridge.

I have a 23" length Barrel on my 6x45 Bolt gun, it's a 1 in 10 twist. I'm shooting 80-grain bullets close enough to call it at 3000fps with 27.0grns of IMR 8208XBR powder. I'm a "BIG" Fan of the 6x45 caliber.

Is there more report with one than the other or is it a wash between the two. I figure the ar is automatically gonna be louder due to gas and action movement. Thank you for your reply.

I think I’ll like it because it marks alot of boxes for me. Thanks for your reply.

I usually go to 23-inches on barrel length when ordering barrels. Since I have other heavy barrel 6mm rifles in the 23-inch length, I ended up at 21 inches, magnum contour, for a bolt action 6x45mm. This was to make it maneuverable and a little lighter to carry into the woods. Some health issues in recent years, planning for the future if I'm not up to carrying the heavier rifles. 6x45mm can do quite a bit like you said, checks alot of boxes.

Why didn't I go to 20-inches. IDK, 21 was the length I picked.

I built 3 6x45s on savage actions.
1st was 24" bbl, 2nd 22" BBL, 3rd a 20" bbl.
24 was putting 65g maxes at 3300 fps, 20" is at 3156fps.
I gave the 24&22" rigs to my boys, The 20" is my own coyote, deer, antelope gun
85g Sierra at 2700fps, accurate as heck.
The 65g vmax at 3156 hits hard to 600 yards on coyote, under 1" @ 100yds.
I assembled 3 ar15s in 6x45 all with 20" bbls, great coyote,deer rigs to 400 yards.
Bolt builds are more accurate though.
My 20" savage rig is easy to carry, swings quickly, so I don't really need a longer bbl.
All lengths were accurate as heck no matter the bullet. Oal in the ar15s was 2.260" no matter the bullet, in my savage build I run them at 2.280" col.

Did mine on a SAKO A1 with a 22" barrel and I have not found it to be a cumbersome rifle to handle getting into and out of deer stands. Mine is an 8 twist because that is what was available when I decided to do it but would probably choose 9 or 10 twist if I'd had the option. Shooting 90BT, 85 Sierra HPBT and 80TTSX equally well at 1/2 - 3/4 groups using H335 and H322.

Can you tell much difference in muzzle blast or report from the 20 bolt compared to your other length bolts? Thanks for the reply.

I use N-133 in the lighter bullets 70gr and up N-135 i-9 twist 24-inch barrel on a 700 Rem. scary good, never disappointed in accuracy or performance.

What brand barrels are you using on your savage bolt guns?

There is a balancing act that you should consider. I assume you are focused on a bolt rifle. I have some shorter guns (18” to 20”) that are handy especially with suppressor. Since you’re not interested in suppressor the overall length isn’t an issue. Longer is better for speed and noise reduction.

Now it’s a game of weight. Have you given much thought to the type of action. You don’t need a full sized, heavy receiver and barrel blank for a 6x45, especially if it is a field gun. Have you considered a Sako L461, CZ527 or even Howa Mini 1500 for the action. You’ll shave some unnecessary weight by matching action size to cartridge.

Last comment. Have you considered a 6TCU. This is basically a 6x45AI. The reason I suggest it is that is is easily distinguishable from standard .223 case. No risk in someone grabbing wrong ammo and putting in wrong chamber.

I can see where that would be a problem. I have heard of folks chambering a blackout round in a 223 and causing a problem.

If you're thinking of building a 6x45 bolt gun with a DBM take a look at the ACCURATE MAG (SKU: 00100-0038) .223 5-round magazine, it can easily be modified to accept cartridge lengths close to 2.5". My 6x45 with an 80-grain Ballistic Tip bullet is 2.424" long, this magazine worked perfectly with a 5-min. modification, super smooth feeding.
