6x40ppc

is anyone shooting one? and if so is it an 8 twist barrel.I am looking to shoot the 100gr bullets. What is a good powder choice?

the 6x40 has the shoulder set at 40 degrees instead of the traditional 30,some may call it 6ppc Ackley. The case has slightly more volume.

OK, that's kinda what I thought it was. Several years ago I shot one called the 6mm Firewalker. There are similar versions with different names.

I have thought about barreling a rifle with a fast twist to shoot the big bullets in 600 yard Benchrest. But, the regular 6 PPC is capable of winning at 600 yards so I gave up on the idea.

But, to your question. Several shooters have already tried what you are proposing. In general, powders with a burning rate between N 135 or Varget on the slow side and H322 on the fast side will get you around 2700fps in a short,26") barrel. The heavier the bullet the slower the powder is a good rule to follow.

You might also want to consider the Grendl case which will give the same results without having to fire-form brass.

Now having said all that, it's my opinion that you are trying to push the PPC where it doesn't belong. There are other cartridges so much better suited to the heavy bullets that it hardly seems productive to try to get the PPC to do the same thing. But, it's your decision and, being a certifiable wildcatter myself, I would never say don't do it. Let us know your results.

I understand what your saying about pushing the 6ppc where it does not belong BUT, here is the deal.
The donor rifle for this project is a very accurate 244 neck 22ppc short and it is built on a 40x action,I do not want to change or disturb the bolt-face hence the PPC 6x40.This chambering will also alow me to approach 6BR velocities with heavier bullets.I may want to put the 22 barrel back on at some point and all that is needed is to switch the barrels and set the headspace and go shoot.

if this makes sence but I do not want to build another complete rifle as I already have another project rifle on the burner besides this one and to be honest I don't want to spend another 3 grand on a dedicated 600yd gun but will part with 800.00 for a rebarrel job and custom dies and I have plenty 220Russian brass. This 6x40 is also a .272 no neck turn.

Ray I value your opinion and if you see any flaws in these plans please speak up as I may have missed something, thanks.
