I think we need a thread just for this one so people don't have to hunt through a bunch of threads. I hope Russ will post up some of his info, he's got some good stuff too.


My reamer is a PTG with a .275NK, a .078FB 1*-30 lead

Couple of things to note: Bullets made up in WW brass have a .271 NK, so my reamer has .004 clearance, I've not tried Lapua but I'm betting I'd have to turn necks to even chamber them. I use a bushing die to make my brass, you have to have the busing screwed down tight to get the neck sized to the bottom to get the brass to fit the chamber the first time.

Bullet OALs touching lands

• 107SMK .............................2.810 to touch lots of room, if this is your bullet you can get a lot more freebore, closer to a .100 or even more.

• Berger 105 VLD Hunting......2.870 to touch Jammed 10 that gets you to 2.880, they barely feed from a standard AICS (no room to chase for sure) but are fine if you are set up with the front plate removed and the ramp set up for it

I haven't tried any other bullets.

A couple of thoughts. I have a reamer with a .274 neck, .131 freebore. From my experience with this chamber, I would like to have a larger neck. The newer Winchester brass measures .272-.273 with a loaded round. I have some newer brass that is horrible with neck thickness measuring from .015-.022. You will have to turn this brass regardless of your reamer neck. I have always turned necks for my prone rifle to measure .267 loaded. I like a little extra clearance. I also like the longer freebore. I have been able to run 105 Hybrids well over 3,200fps loaded .035 off the lands with exceptional accuracy. This allows for extra powder charge without having pressure problems. I have seen shorter throats such as a .075 limit velocities to under 3,100. I know for most people this is not an issue as most won't push them this hard. However, I also have one chambered for a PRS style rifle with the same reamer. The reason I like the long throat is that I have seen the 105 Hybrids shine when jumped .050-.070. I can seat them long in a AI style magazine and still have the .050 jump. It seems to be the best of both worlds. I have run the Hybrids out of a magazine at 3,130 with N160, but I see signs of pressure problems beginning. I will back that load down or try another powder combo with it. Of course, with the shorter throat, you can always stick a throating reamer in it to lengthen it.

I too would not recommend a .75 Freebore. A .100 at a min. is about as far as I would go. My Current Reamer is .128 and all rounds fit the AI Mag just fine. The short stubby bullets don't mind jumping one bit so its a win win like Matt Pointed out. Just had a Fellow shooter who is un happy with his .75 Freebore. Your Bullet Boat Tail / Shank junction which has the Pressure ring or fat part of the bullet ...will get into the Donut area as pointed out out from Fellow shooter who is not happy with his. There is A lot of neck on this case. Which is the advantage to it.

I have been reluctant to post as I see a trend to the .75 freebore and I don't concur I fought with that same Scenerio with the 115's and it did not turn out well. so you can take this with a grain of salt. Your just going to have to decide what is going to work best for you. I have posted pictures before of a .128 Free Bore and 105Hybrids in a AI magazine with 2500 rounds on the barrel. You will have to look for yourself.

I may end up with one of these before it's over. (while I'm at it if I order one for 7mm I'll have a set of 4 to cover all of what I think of as the major calibers) I can see that the bearing surface on the 107s is well back in the neck. Further than I like.

Russ, my idea in starting this thread was to get some reliable info out there from people who are really shooting these so they can make the right decision on reamers. I'm thinking that a .100 is about the most versatile option.

Tested some 7977 IMR Enduron powder last week. It was the first 50 rounds on a New barrel. I normally don't test anything until there is 100 to 200 Rounds on any barrel as it seems to speed up about then. Having make changes. However... Like H1000 you cant stick enough powder in to overpressure it seems. More to follow.
Going to Put a Strain Gage on that Barrel as well so I can get some Pressure Data.

I'm going to venture a guess for you on the 105VLD.

My 105 hunting VLDs are 2.870 to touch in a .078FB, assuming the same lead angle on reamers (probably safe if you are buying from PT&G) and the only difference in the reamers is FB and you get 2.920 to touch with the 105VLD. Note from my post above that compared to the 107SMK the VLD has a longer OAL to touch, it has a long skinny nose, so it may be the same way compared to the 108 (or the 105 hybrid).

One other possible difference in OAL would possibly be ±.005 in base to shoulder variation depending on how the smith cut the chamber, this is after all a "wildcat" chambering. My shoulder once fired is on .000 on a Whidden 6SLR case comparitor.

Cant give any help on the 108s.
