6PPC short range BR barrel life?

If I'm only competing in local matches and not using super-hot loads of N-133, how many rounds can I expect to get out of a barrel? I usually end up using about 29 grains of N133 behind a 65 to 68 grain bullet

Short -

Howdy !

The question is typically…. Now many rounds can I get out of a barrel Before the desired accuracy level goes away ? For no-kidding’ benchrest competitors, such a round count number would likely be lower than what an infrequent competitor would might be happy with.

You’d have to decide for yourself

I’m at a match right now and the guy loading and shooting next to me has over 1800 on his barrel and just shot a zero and has been shooting 1s and low 2s. I don’t think it’s done yet.

Edited to say, the group I referenced as a zero was a mid 1, it looked smaller through the scope before it was scored.

There is the occasional barrel that give longer than expected life in every caliber. There is also the barrel that gives less than expected life. 357Mag is also correct in that it depends on our expectations. Most serious benchrest competitors consider them done around 1,000 to 1,200 rounds.

Perhaps a better answer is to shoot it until it is no longer competitive with the group you normally compete against. Keep good records of its performance and round count as well.

My 6ppc has started shooting more 2s and not as many zeros. I shoot a no turn neck so I’m going to clean up the necks and see if accuracy returns. As the necks have definitely thickened. I also noticed what appears to be a carbon ring. I also cleaned that . So we shall see . I shoot 28.3 g of LT-32 at 3360 fps - 800 rounds on the barrel

Guy at our club has one still shooting great at 1800+ rounds. He shot 14/15 inside outs on a UBR practice target a few weeks ago.
It is a unicorn barrel, always shot great, only barrel he has ever had that held that kind of accuracy that far into the life cycle.

1800+ on mine so far. I've won the last 5 ubr matches I've shot it in. It didn't come alive till 800. I'm gonna shoot it in Jamies 100m match Sat at Allegheny. I keep expecting it to start throwing them any day now. (That's gonna be my excuse if i do not shot well !
I got around 2400 on a Hunter style barrel before it started falling.
I shoot pretty hot 30.1, vv 133

Have you figured out what the throat erosion is yet at 1800 rds compared to newly fresh chambered? It would help to know what that would be? Thanks.

Which brass are you running for 30.1 grain drop?
Just curious.

Thanks
