I am planning on doing a 6ppc on a 700 action and had a few questions. Rem doesn't offer a PPc bolt face so i picked up a .222 faced short action. Should I just open the bolt face or replace the bolt head? If I open the face to what O/D?
You can go either way with the bolt. Either replace it or open it up. ,You cant just replace the bolt "head" BTW, unless you convert it to a Savage type).
But you need to be careful in how much you want to invest in a 700 action. In the end you may pay as much as you would have for a custom action. And in a 700, those are $$$ that you will probably never get back if you decide to sell.
Don't forget, you may not care how the project will turn out but somewhere down the road, a shooter will be putting that rifle up to his cheek. Make it safe.
Not to "Butt in" but I used a 308 Boltface Rem action on my 6 PPC VH rifle for 2 years, as did my wife Sara, and neither one of us ever had a failure to extract. Hers had a Sako type and mine was a stock Rem.
