6ppc ***** question added about the 6x45

i am throughin around the idea of a 6 ppc in my AR, and have been reading alot. i have a stainless steel ppc barrel, so i figured it would be an ok build to start with that wouldnt cost an arm and a leg.

but. through my reading, i have herd of people re-sizing and fireforming brass from .220 russian and others from 7.62x39 russian brass. i do not no what kind of neck the barrel has, so i figured that i would just get a "no-turn" reamer. ,i think that this would be best because i do not have a lot of time, and am not set up for turning brass necks)

sooo. wheres the best place to find ppc brass. is it better to use 7.62x39 brass, or try to find some from a brass sorce like graf and sons.

thanks for your info, brian

p.s. what do you guy think about an AR in 6ppc? i was going to make it an 18" barrel, with a bolt type action. basically not put a gas system on it, and mill the upper reciever for the use with a bolt handle. now, i know some of you say, why not just build a bolt gun then... all i can say is...???

thanks guys

i was reading some more, and have found that the old BR cartridge of 6mmx45 is only around 100 to 150 fps slower than the 6ppc. now, i have herd that this round is very accurate. is this true?? i would have to guess yes because ists stated as a benchrest cartridge. i am thinking that this might be the way i wan to go. it would definatly be more cost effective on ly part. but.. my real question is.....

i have a set of hornady new dimension .223 dies, and was wondering if i can use these dies with a 6mm expander ball in place of the .224 expander ball to make the 6mm/.223 brass. will this work?? or do i have to get a new set of dies?

also... do you guys think that this round would still be accurate if used in a 16" barrel??

what would be a good twist for this cartridge if i were to use it for heavier bullets in the range of 68-77 or even 80 grn bullets.

the gun will probably only see 200 yards max. what do you think that the effective range would be of the aformentioned combo as stated above?

thanks for all the patients guys... brian

thanks guys, brian.

Brian,

Your instincts are good,to use a PPC-type case in the AR for increased accuracy). But you don't want to go to the trouble of forming brass. Robert Whitley has worked out a solution to this, which he calls the 6mmAR. This is a 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm. It gives you essentially a 6PPC that doesn't require fire-forming or neck-turning.

Robert has complete uppers, die sets, even 6mmAR magazines--the whole shebang.

You might take a chamber cast of your PPC barrel. I would expect that it might work with a 6mmAR with little more than running a neck reamer in.

Thing is, the method of barrel attachment is different. If that barrel was a take-off from a bolt action, it may be a little tricky to fit it to an AR15 and keep the chamber.

Brian, I just received my 6mmAR upper from Robert yesterday. It is definitely a high quality piece. Fit,function, and cosmetics are fantastic to say the least. I will be shooting it real soon and post a report. I will start out at 100 yds. this week end and then move out to 500 and 600 yds. next time out which will probably be a couple of weeks from now. I will keep you informed. Thanks, Bill

i would love a 6mm Ar, or even the new TURBO version, but i dont have that kind of cash!!! that is a LOT of money, but i guess thats what you need to spend when you want to compete. right?!?

this is the reason for the 6x45. i hear it can shoot the same as a ppc, an is lot cheaper.

thanks for the info. keep it comin!!
