A few months ago i bought a 6PPC on a Remington action, .262 neck with 25 fireformed cases. I wanted some extra case so i bought some 220 Russian's neck turned them to .0085" and then tried them in the chamber, bolt closed no problems. I still haven't fireformed them yet but the loaded round chambers well.
A couple of weeks ago i a much newer 6PPC on a Stolle Panda action, .262 neck with again, 25 fireformed case. Again i wanted some extra cases. So i neck turned about 30 cases and when i went to chamber the empty case i could not close the bolt. I have trimed them to 1.4990". The fireformed case i got with the rifle are trimmed to 1.477's. So i tried to close the bolt again and with a fair bit of force it did close. I then extracted the case and re chambered it. The bolt closed much easier.
Now im not up to date with the "headspace" thing, but thats what i put this all down to. The Remington action rifle cases are trimmed to 1.495", the newer ones are 1.477".
Now i do have a Redding 6PPC small base body die, I'm waiting for the Redding 6PPC small base, bushing F/L die to arrive, so i put a few cases through the small base die and slowly adjusted the die down till the cases chambered easier. I could see at the case neck/shoulder junction where the die has pushed the shoulder down a few thou.
So, now that ive experienced for the first time in 3 years of reloading what i think is a "headspace" issue, have i done the right thing in pushing the shoulder back with the 6PPC s/b body die?
I think now i will have to run the cases over the K&M turning mandrel again to get rid of the internal doughnut that formed from the die.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
