Started loading 6ppc, recommended to start around 27.0 grs of VV N133 are all these loads over 27.0 grs VV N133 compressed? TIA

Mine likes more powder. Set to just touch powder when bullet is in lands. Viper Drop port with Kreiger 4 groove barrel.

First off, I'm assuming you are talking about bullet weights around 66-68 grs? 27 Grs. of 133 is nowhere near compressed in the 6ppc with these bullets and a standard BR freebore. Matter of fact, its a very light load in most BR rifles. Are we talking about a BR rifle, or a factory rifle? Most BR competitors work up loads in the 28.5- 29.5 gr range for 133, but some go up to as much as 30.5 grains. Some rifles won't take this kind of pressure, so you need to work up slowly. If we are talking about a factory rifle, then you will probably reach high pressure much sooner that you would with a BR action.

A longer drop tube and a slower drop of the powder. I can get 30.5 grains of 133 in the case, although that load is definetely compressed. Also, why are you concerned about the load being compressed? While my load in the ppc utilizes 8202 and not 133, it is compressed and I have no ill affects. In my score rifle, a 30BR, I use so much N130 in the case that I had to go to a tighter bushing so the bullets wouldn't be forced back out after seating.

This is my first attempt at loading 6ppc, all my other reloading experiences I never had a full case before, and was concerned about pressure,after reading your reply my thoughts are unfounded thanks, John

If you have a measure with a long clear plastic drop tube, approach the point where the powder starts to fall carefully, and just as soon as you see any powder in the tube, stop, wait till it stops and then advance the handle as little as you can and wait etc. With an 8" .22 cal tube and good technique 30.5 is doable. The same charge dropped fast heaps over the top of the neck. If you seat your bullet about half way between touch and jam, and start with 28.8, you should find a load. If you have any vertical, add powder gradually. You are FL sizing every time with a custom die such as one from Harrells, right? In my experience, 133 likes quite a bit of neck tension. Let us know how you do.

Keep in mind that every rifle is different, even rifles built on the same action. I have some BAT actions that will take more pressure than others. Thats why loads should be worked up carefully. N133 is a little on the slow side for the ppc and in some guns, you simply can't get enough of it in the case to create too much pressure. That said, other guns with those same loads may be way over pressure, depends on a number of factors. Let your rifle, chronograph and groups tell you when you've gotten where you want to be. I think what's going on here is that jcullen is fireforming brass. If that is the case, 26.5 gr will be around half way up the neck. That is fine for fireforming. After fireforming the case will hold around 30 gr. of vv133. If this is your first time with a 6ppc I recommend you get some help from an experienced shooter one on one. There are a lot of fine details that will improve your results.
