6ppc in an AR15

Anybody have a 6ppc in an ar15?? If so please contact me, I am looking for some ideas on loads, problems that may come up and general ideas on the 6ppc in the ar15.

It's been done before, several years ago. Bottom line: the short, stubby .440" head diameter cartridges DO work well now if you use the proper magazines and barrel extension in an AR. 6.5 Grendel, 6mmAR, do a search & you'll find lots of info out there.

The 6PPC can work in an AR - check out Glen Zeideker's first Handloading for Competition book - it's just a lot of hassle to GET it to work if you're reinventing the wheel, so to speak.

There are several other 6mm variants too, built off the 6.8SPC / .25/.30 Remington case dimensions. John Holliger has one,6WOA) then there's the .20/.22/6mmPDK, and my personal favorite the 6HAGAR.

Brass is an issue with the latter cartridge as you gotta make your own up from .25/.30 REM & all the parent cases use LR primers so there's not quite enough brass at the head to keep primers tight with hot loads for 600 yards over more than three or four reloadings. Robert Whitley's 6mmAr resolves that problem by using the SR-primered 6.5 Grendel case necked down for 6mm.

There's also the 6RAT but I'm not saying anything more on that as it's currently under development.

SPClark, Thanks for the info. I got the Grendel mags already. I will be using Silver State Armory 6ppc brass, it comes formed as 6ppc already instead of forming 220 Rus. Lapua brass. What is I am trying to do is not reinvent the wheel. I have shot/had 6ppc in bolt guns I dont want to blow up the AR. I got an MGI bolt and carrier and am ordering a JP adjustable gas block.

More info and insight great full form those FAMILIAR with the 6ppc in an AR.

This upper will be used mostly for Coyotes and a few Prairie dogs.

I built up a 6 PPC AR and had to decide on magazines. I got lots of advise from some shooters that while it was good contradicted each other quite a bit. I'm basically an IPSC shooter with some heavy play at long range in teaching snipers and varmint hunting.

I knew that the 7.62 X 39 case was basically the same as the 6 PPC so I just hopped on line and ordered two MWG 7.62 magazines from Brownell's. I had been told these would not work, after I ordered them) but had hope. LOL

The magazines came in, I went to the range with my new toy and lo and behold it ran through 100 rounds without a hitch!! Why it worked is debatable. I do know the barrel has M4 ramps and it is a standard lower. I loaded the rounds out to magazine length using 55 to 80 grain bullets.

The mags worked, the rifle worked and now after fire forming some cases to deal with a slightly long chamber I am ready to pursue the accuracy part of the equation.
