6PPC bullets at much higher velocity

Hello,
I have a dedicated single shot varmint rifle in .244 with a Hart 1-12 twist which is a "fast" barrel, when chronographed over a reliable unit. I know it already prefers bullets to a max of 80 grains and have acquired an amount of bullets 62-67 grains meant for 6PPC competition. Has anyone on the site used these very accurate bullets at much higher velocity than a 6PPC case is capable of delivering? I know incredibly high velocities can mean "toast" for accuracy in a barrel and have worn a 6mm/284 out with 400 rounds years ago. So, if I can attain quite high velocities and retain the accuracy these bullets are capable of,varmints in this area will be in great danger.

Any real experience with this subject would be appreciated.

Hi Feller, had to go back in my notes to see but in 09 thru 2011 I used two 6mm/244s built on 722 rem actions for my long range prairie dog rifles. Both had 27" Krieger 10 twist for the 80gr bullets. But I came into a large amount of 62gr bench rest bullets and worked up loads approaching 4k fps with the boat tails and 3800 with the flat base using R15 and R17 without exceeding case expansion at the 200 line or a stiff bolt. Both were very accurate and spectacular expansion on the dogs. Didn't allow the barrels to get hot and ran wet patches of Butch's thru them while I was allowing them to cool. Switching rifles about every 20 rds. After 2011 we switched to all 6BRs. I still have the 244s and they still are sub 3/4" rifles so I can't comment on the barrel wear, to be honest I've never looked at either of them with a bore scope. But I know both have over 1500 rds on them. Just my experience, John

I shot some 66gr FB bullets out of my 243 10tw and they were about 3750fps on my chrony. Accuracy was fine for hunting. JME. WD
