6PPC & 8 twist barrel

Well, I was a little bored the other day and decided to chamber a 8 twist barrel with a PPC reamer I had. I realize the old stand by combo of shooting 68 grain bullets with a 13.5 or 14 twist has proven itself over the last three decades. But maybe, just maybe, might it be possible to shoot 85-105 grainers with this combo? I've got a throating reamer so if need be I can increase the freebore, too.

I'm talkin' about 300 to 400 yard accuracy. I know the conventional 6PPC can and does shoot world record groups at 300. But on a windy day, and without the luxury of windflags, would the higher BC bullets come into their own?

More importantly, has anybody found a good combination of a particular powder and bullet, at least to get me started.

Now before people tell me I should have used the 6BR I just wanted to try this first. I have a 6BR reamer, and if worse comes to worse, I'll just run that reamer into this PPC chamber.

Thanks

Your idea will work quite fine, but you will be a little under powered. No matter, just give it a fair shake and make up your own conclustions. I think an 80gr bullet on a ppc for 300 yard work makes a lot of since.
I a going to have dave kiff make me a 6ppc with 40 degree shoulders. I will use this chambering for short range though. 100-200 yard shooting. i love the ppc and i want to do something that i can call my own, so thats the reason behind my idea. I dont really figure i will gain anything, i just want to do it! I will make the dies myself along with chambering the barrel. Should be a good experience. Lee

Good luck with your adventure and please send me a PM after you have had a chance to shoot this barrel some.

I shoot in some of the groundhog matches in Penna. and I know three fellows that shot the 6ppc in matches out to 500 yds. and were compeitive, but they used slow twist barrels (14") and 66 to 68gr. bullets. There was another guy that had an 10 twist 6br and shot the 90 gr. Lapua bullets and he shot very well also. My thinking would be to get a 9 or 10 twist 6ppc barrel chambered and shoot the 80, 87, 90gr. berger and the 90 gr. lapua. I don't know what velocity you could get but 3000fps should be doable and should work out to 500 yds. But I don't see any one shooting fast twists 6ppc in competition and that could be a sign that it doesn't work to well, but I sure would like to try one. Also I shot the 95 gr. smk at 3000fps in competion and it didn't seem to be overly wind sensetive.

Might want to try some 95gn Berger VLD's. These have a very short bearing length and may not require throat reaming.

Jerry,

From previous conversations, I think Lee wants to increase powder capacity somewhat.

I don't remember exactly but was thinking that he intended the body-shoulder junction to move forward.

FWIW,

Set,

You won't be able to take out that PPC chamber with the BR chamber without setting back some.

If you want something else to try, look at the 6mmAR. It's basically a 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm. There are a couple of different shoulder angles.

I think that the 6mm Dune, 6mm SRB and 6mm RAT are in the same neighborhood, too.

I like the concept of either the 6SLR or 6CM and I would prob prefer to go with the 6SLR. I hate to have to fireform brass.
