6mmBR Twist Rate 100 - 300 Yards

I wish to venture into accurate shooting off a bench at 100 - 300 yards. I have the opportunity to get a used but basic and capable Savage Long range Precision Varminter in 6mmBR. It has a 1:12 twist barrel with about 600 rounds. Couple of questions. Is the 1:12 twist rate optimal for 100 - 300 yards or will I be giving away some accuracy with that twist rate. Targets from this gun seem to show it does well at 100 yards with 74 grain Bergers. Also, how long does a 6mmBR barrel last. I heard about 2500 rounds, but maybe that is not correct.

I think you will be fine with that twist at point blank range and barrel life may be even greater than expected. Lots of info on the home page regarding twist and preferred loads.

I think you will be happy with the 12 twist. I have owned a LRPV just like this, and it shot everything from 55gr. to 80gr. bullets. It shot 68gr. Bergers exceptionally well.

You should be safe using 85gr, and lighter bullets.

Some 12`s will stabilize the 87 Vmax and i believe the 88 Bergers as well, velocity will help with the longer bullets...

Be sure to try the 80 grain Berger Match Varmint flat base. It is an exceptionally accurate bullet and will do very well from 100-300 yards. Berger recommends a 12" twist.

With a 1/14 twist I am able to get the best use from some of the really great bullets produced by custom bullet makers like Precision Ballistics or Bart's etc. etc. for the 6ppc, which as far as my yardstick goes--work as well in the 6BR. I have also been able to get the best from some of the new Berger offerings like the WEB and am looking forward to trying the column bullet as well.
