6mmBR Norma - what twist to choose?

I need some advice guys.

I’m buying a Savage LRPV 6mmBR Norma. I have the option of getting a 1:12 twist or a 1:8 twist. I would sure appreciate any opinions and advice.

Thanks

Sorry. I should have clarified the distances I intend to shoot. I have a .223 that I"ll be using for distances from 100 to 300 yards. The 6mmBR is intended for distances from 300 yards out. Certainly to 600 yards, and I'd like to be able to "play" at 1000 if all goes well. So with the 6BR I'll be (I think) wanting to shoot the heavier bullets that will do better at longer distances.

Really your choice based on what you want to do with the rifle. Shorter distances, using the lighter weight bullets, at 3 to 400 yd. the 12 twist would probably be the best choice. If you want to "reach out" to further distances, 5 & 600 yd, then the 8 twist would be a better choice for the necessary heavy weight bullets in the 95 to 107 gr. weights. 8 twists will usually work well with the lighter weight bullets, so it may be a little more versatile/ your call. If you have not already done so, check out the 6BR info page on this site: a lot of worthwhile info there. All the suggested accuracy load combinations I've tried have all been excellent, have not found a bad one yet. Sections on powder, primer, brass & bullet selections are all first class. And just saw your newest posting, and with that in mind, definately the 8 twist, needed to stabilize the heavy weight bullets that are required for the longer distances.

solid advice from fdshuster. i have the same gun you are looking at in 1 in 8 twist. shoots 107 smk great... hope this helps

As almost all things in life the choice involves a trade off. If you go with a 12 twist you will be limited to about 80 grains for bullets. And as you mention at 600-1000 yards the low drag high BC heavy bullets will do better. They require the faster twist or they will not be stable in flight. The faster twist can also handle the lighter bullets, so at least on the surface that is the better choice.

But, if you scratch a bit deeper the trade offs start to come in. First to handle the larger bullets you need a longer throat in the barrel. You would assume Savage would do that when they supply a 1 in 8 twist. That means the short light bullets are left with a long jump to the lands. There may be an accuracy cost with that.

And second the high spin of the fast twist can make the bullets wobble in flight due to bullet imbalance. Dan Lilja explains in the article at the link below. Probably not important to a varmint shooter, but it is to a target shooter at the shorter ranges.

But for sure, if you want to shoot the 80+ bullets long range the only choice is the 1 in 8 twist. On the practical side, you may want to think where you can shoot long range. Can be hard to find ranges over 300 yards.

Last in the Savage line, I think if I was going to go 1 in 8 and long range I would go with the Target Rifle 12 F Class instead of the LRPV. Heavier gun, better stock for target shooting, and longer barrel to keep velocity as high as possible.

If you truly intend to use the rifle from 300yds out, than the 1-8 is the way to go. Optimal for heavy bullets yet still has the ability to shoot lighter stuff as well, though not as well as a 1-14. Like has been said before, you need to make a trade off with regards to what bullet weight is going to shoot best, and that is determined with what you plan to use it for.

For 600yds and out, heavy bullets are going to be king, so the choice is easy.

After all, it's a Savage and pre-fit barrels are easy to install if you feel the need for a 1-14 later.
