6mmbr no turn neck: should i turn?

i am using lapua brass. and was wondering if my groups would shrink if i neck turn. i am already getting groups in the .33" and i think that that is good but i am always looking for more. i am a young shooter and am trying to gain as much knowledge as i can. i also have a 7mm-08 as my hungting rig 18" tube shooting 120 bt and was wondering if i should switch from the win brass to the lapua brass or neck turn for that cartridge. i have other rifles and have been shooting since i was about 15 but just got into the "next step accuracy thing" found this website and built a 6br because of the site. savage action as i am not trying to take out a mortgage on action or custom gunsmithing. any help would be appreciated.

Klayton83,

With the Lapua brass, you don't need to turn the necks. I and many others have shot 600 yd records with no turned necks with 6 BR and 6BR IMP's. Things like shooting good match grade bullets, weight sorting brass, will help as much turning.

As far as the hunting gun, I have tired turning for factory guns, with out seeing any results. Then you turn the neck even smaller than your chamber, it makes thing worse. Tight necks should have 0.002" clearence. The hunting grade bullets, will not shoot with match bullets. I am shooting Berger hunting this year, I will see how they do on deer.

Klayton83: As Mark and Mikie said, leave them alone. It's very difficult, if not impossible to improve brass that is already so close to perfect. No advantage, but several disadvantages to outside neck turning for a typical sloppy factory chamber.

You'll get the groups down a bit by simply sorting "good" bullets by weight and Ogive(bullet comparator),for each 5 shot group set at different OAL.Even so called Match bullets may have a .015 difference in the Ogive.

If you decide to sort bullets, I find there is a difference in the both the body diameter of bullets as well as the pressure ring. My suspicion is that the body diameter is more significant, because it is a much larger section of the bullet.

As long as you dont have hard extraction then dont turn the brass. If you did I would only skim the outside to even up the surface. But that alone wont make that much difference.Weight sorting the brass and bullets is a better choice. The maker of the bullet is important. You get what you pay for.
