6MMBR freebore with 105 vlds?

Im getting ready to order a 6mmBR reamer and was trying to decide what freebore I should get. I read in a past article on here that Kiff liked a .115 - .120 freebore for 105 grain bullets. But a call to PT&G left me wondering if that was best. I didnt get to talk to Dave yet but they said he seemed to make alot of 6mm reamers with a .104 freebore. I shoot a .104 freebore in my 6x47L so I know its not bad but I have never owned a 6mmbr and just wondered what you all have and like or dislike about it.

Thanks

I have a 6mmBR 272 NK with .104 FB chamber reamer from PTG. I shoot VLDs with it and it performs perfectly.

I only had one barrel cut with it, so if you want it, PM me. GA Precision did the smith work. They chambered a Krieger 8tw on a Stiller TAC-30 for me. It'll save you some money and possibly wait time. Also have both the Go and NOGO gages from PTG.

Ryan; I have a 6BR Pacific reamer, .272 no-turn neck, with .104" and believe it to be the ideal freebore. With it I'm able to seat the light/short 55 V-max to touch with good bullet/ neck contact and the 107 Sierra HPBT MatchKing to touch with only minimal intrusion into the powder area. Almost all bullet selections in between these 2 extremes are compatable with this freebore length. :)

Most of my shooting is at 1000 yards and I use my 6x47L for that. I plan on shooting this 6mm br at 600 yards. But if it is a true tack driver I can see wanting to go to 1000 with it from time to time. The reason I am even questioning the .104 freebore compared to a slighly longer freebore is that if I use it for 1000 yards the longer freebore may let me load it a little hotter with out to much presure. I know its not much but I would hate to have ordered the 104 and find out that for 1000 yard you really wanted a slightly longer FB.

It really comes down to what they have in stock if you really want to know the truth. I want to go to a 600 yard match on Feb 20th and that doesnt give me enough time to have one made special. Just wanted to make sure I shouldnt skip the match and get one made. Sounds like I can just get one off the shelf.

Ryan: An easy fix: load up a dummy round with the bullet of your choice, seated in a case to the depth you want it, and send it off to dave Kiff/Pacific, or whoever you choose to make the reamer. The method I've always used, and it's served me well.

Different caliber but same thoughts. I called today and asked for recommendations on freebore for 105-108 in a 6BRX, the response was .104. I had asked several 6BRX users and the majority was .112 or so for the 105-108s.

When i questioned their recommendation for .104 , the girl answering the phone asked a tech in the back and he responded that was their common reamer for that question. I went with the .112 because i wanted to seat the 105 and 108s a little longer and keep them in front of the neck shoulder junction.

I may shoot some 95s or the like to remove a varmint or two, if so they will jump a little but my experiences have been that doesnt hurt accuracy in most cases.

By the way, they had one each of the .104 and .112 in stock when i called for the BRX. The .112 is on its way to me.

Thanks for the replies.

I think im going to order the .104.
Only because its on the shelf and I can have it in a few days.
I doubt very much Ill shoot it at a 1000 yards instead of my 6x47L anyway. And thats really the only reason Id see giving it a little more space. I just wanted to make sure I wasnt making a huge mistake.

Ryan: I believe you're better off going with the freebore just a little on the "short" side of long. You will probably have the greatest increase in throat length during the first 1 to 200 rounds fired, when the throat is still being broken in. After that it will settle down and erosion will progress at the usual 6BR slow rate. So, after 150 rounds, or so fired, your .104" will most likely be around .108+? Can't put a firm number on it, but it will lengthen. You could keep a record of it using the Stoney Point/Hornady Chamber OAL gauge, with the same bullet used for each measurement. I know all my new chamberings have lengthened during initial break-in.
