6mmbr for prairie dog

hey fellers,
gonna build me a 6mmbr for prairie dogs. any suggestions on bullet weight, twist, and freebore? trying to get all my ducks in a row because im attempting this project myself. by the way did i tell you i have never done anything like this? im back had to go throw up. no but really, i have learned a bunch on this site and i appreciate all the help.

It will help if you determine what distances you want to shoot. If you are shooting from 100 to 300 yds., a 1-14" will drive 65 & 68 grn. bullets very accurately. Beyond 300 yds., you'll want to consider a faster rate of twist required to stabilize the heavier bullets. A rule of thumb is .080 to .090 freebore is a good overall choice; .071 for 87 grn. V-Max, .113 for the 107 grn. Sierra Match Kings & .045 for 95 grn. Bergers. Explore this sight and use the search mode as there is alot of very good information from knowledgeable shooters.

thanks chino, yeah i will probably be shooting no farther than 400 yards from what my friends say. they have been a few times all ready. i didn't know about the search, it will save me allot of time now. SPM

Hey SPM, just a thought but I think you you do good with a 1:10 twist and freebore it for the 87`s. Just in case you decide to poke out aliitle further in the future. If you don`t expect to ever shoot the hevies for comp. or really far out there... there`s really no need for a faster twist and you can shoot the big varmit bullets with no prob. and have neck space to get the small pills close to the lands.

My 6br barrel has a 1:12 twist and is 22" long.
My standard ground hog load is 31 gr of h322, fed. match primer
and toped off with a sierra 70 gr. blitz or hornady 65/75 gr. v-max
I'm not sure what the mv is but I would guess around 3400 fps but
it is very reliable out to 400 yds. or at least that's the furthest that I've had any opertunity.

I have a 22" Pac Nor 1:10 twist, I obtained a reamer from Dave Kiff .70 free bore with a .272 no neck turn for Lapua brass. I shoot 70-80gr bullets. I get 5 shot groups I can cover with a dime. I mainly shoot 75gr V-Maxs with 32gr 4895 I believe vel was around 3250. Does a great job on putting coyotes down and throws some pretty good chunks on rabbits.

I am into the SPLAT factor when I am choosing cartridges for shooting p. dogs. It simply bores me to death to shoot them when they just fall over. Also, wind can be a big factor, and shooting 3-4 times at a dog gets real frustrating as the wind shifts and swirls.

Everyone has their own ideas of what they like...it's a hobby, so make it fun for what you like.

I shot the 60's at 3650 and the 65's at 3550 using H335 with great success to 300 and to 400 on calm days. The bullets with this speed out of a 12 twist gives great helicopters, gyros, and all sorts of contorting acrobatics on the dogs and more important, humane kills...very few draggers back in the holes.

When the wind gets up, then go to 30 inch barrel 243 AI, shoot the 80g Sierra Blitz at 3600 or the 70g Blitz king at 3850-4050 depending on your load of Win 760 or AA 2700 and you will be good to 600 on the calmer days or to 350 in a 25-30 mph wind.

South Dakota has brutal winds, you need to plan on carrying some horse power with you for those days when storms are approaching or blowing out.

If you want a walk on the wild side, try the 6 Dasher. I shot a cartridge almost a clone to the 6 Dasher, which was a 243 AI reamer that had been ran in .100 further than the 6 BR go gauge. I shot the 60's at 3850, 65's at 3750, and the 70's at 3650 with Match accuracy. I shot more zero's with the 60's going 3850 than I ever did with any of my Stole Panda's and Hall "M's" in 6 PPC. Almost made me want to go back and shooting competition again.

If money were no object, a 27" 6 BR in a Max Heavy Varmint with
a 12 twist and a second barrel with a 29" 6 Dasher in 10 twist to shoot the 80g Bergers and 87g V Max would be a winning combo, but that is just how I would have fun with the project. The 80g Sierra Blitz BT carry a long ways on a dog town, and you will love how they detonate a p. dog!

Anyone shot the 60 -70 grain bullets thru their 1-10 twist? Been shooting the 75vmax, 80 berger 87 vmax. Just wanting to try the lighter bullets Thanks

I started using 65 v-max the last months of fall for p-dogs and was impressed with um. I used 31.8 H4895 and they shot @3350 and grouped under .5 moa out to 300yrds. Had to jump them a lot and they still shot good.Very nice efect on the close shots
