6mmbr die question

I'm interested in building a new rifle in 6mmbr norma. I'm having trouble picking dies. I was wondering if hornady dies #546432 would work. I've been reading as much as I can, and the conclusions very. Some say you can use any 6mmbr die as long as if you are shooting the heavy bullets you have a norma chamber. Im still confused and just wanting to know if this particular die set will work for a norma chamber and norma brass?

The best advise I can give you is, build the rifle before you buy a resizing die. You can then buy a custom or semi-custom die that properly resizes the brass for whatever chamber you have. Remember the name "Harrell's Precision" for a really nice semi-custom FL bushing die. Very inexpensive at $75.

Thanks for the help and the recommendations. I will look into the dies you all listed. I'm still curious to know if new dies labeled 6mmbr rem will resize norma brass in a norma chamber? I guess I'll do some more research. Thank you all

Yes. Unless you find some REALLY, REALLY old dies that have the original Remington 6BR length of 1.500". The 6BR Norma is 0.060" longer than the 6BR Remington. All of the current 6BR Remington dies (Redding, Hornady, RCBS, etc.) say 6BR Remington but are really 6BR Norma. I believe Redding points that out on their die chart.

And yes, the Harrell's die is great as long as you know where the reamer is for your next barrel so it matches. Factory gun might not be worth a Harrells die.

Thanks for your help that answer my question

The dies you linked to will work.

That being said, if you goal is precision shooting you will encounter some shortcomings.

1. Adjusting bullet seating depth.

The threads on the bullet seating stem are rather coarse. A small turn will move the stem pretty far compared to a micrometer seating die. Plus, if you move the stem you have no good way of knowing where it was, so changing it to load two different bullets is a first class PITA.

2. Neck tension.

You will have no way of adjusting the die to either increase or decrease neck tension.

3. Overworking the neck area of the brass.

The sizing die has an expander ball to increase the diameter of the neck. The neck are of the sizing die is undersized so the the expander ball will determine the neck inside diameter.

4. Overworking the shoulders and body of the brass.

In order to size the entirety of the the neck you must run the brass all of the way into the sizing die. This will typically reduce the body of the brass back to SAAMI minimum which you probably don't need to do. Because the threads of the die are rather course, it will be challenging to adjust the depth of the die to size the entire length of the neck and not push the shoulder back excessively.

These may not be issues for you initially but if you intend to engage in precision shooting you will need to address all of them eventually.

When my LGS recently built my 6BR, (no turn neck) I asked him what dies? He recommended Redding type 'S' and the Forster ultra micrometer seater .

Works for me.

I have the hornady 2 die set. Wouldn't recommend it. I was getting a lot of runout and somewhat inconsistent seating depths. I switched the seater to the le wilson and that made a big difference and I took out the expander ball and started using the Sinclair expander die and mandrel and now I'm getting low runout and consistent seating but if you start with a good die set like barrels in the first place you don't have to mess with all that.

I have a microadjust seating stem for hornady dies. To be honest my expectations for this build are probably not in line for what the cartridge is capable of. I'm a .5 to 1.5 moa shooter on average and am still working on my own shooting problems. I'm just trying to get into the 6mmbr for personal reasons. Theis dies are just to get me in and see if I'm interested I really don't have the finance to get into a supreamly accurate 6mmbr build.

If you're going to mess with a 6br you should aim for 5 shot 100 yrd groups in the .15-.25 inch range. The hornady set will easily get you in the .5 moa but you can do better.

I’ve used the Redding completion die set from the beginning and have no complaints. Micrometer seater and neck die, body die to easily control shoulder bump. Bushing neck die to test and tune neck tension, a little more expensive, but works great.

Thanks for the confidence in the cartridge. I honestly plan to use this as a all around everything gun form punching steel out to 600 and some varminting. I was looking into a 6mm with a smaller powder charge than the 243win that I didn't have to switch bolt heads for.

Yea I would say my expectations are lacking if I could get .4 in groups using hornady pills I would just be tickled.
I have a friend that uses RCBS gold match dies and Hornday 105 gr bullets he shoots very well at a low cost.

You need to ensure that the dies are for Norma also ensure that a small decap pin is installed. Forster microseater will work well if your not ready for Wilson and Arbor press in addition before you can get a Harrell's FL die you will need to Fire form your brass at least 3x that will require at minimum neck sizing 2x I use a $40.00 Forster. There's a few more subtle things to get by if choose to go 6 BR
Anyone on this forum will help.
