6mmBr Build

To start off, I have been reading posts on here for a week and this site seems to be on of the best around. So as the title says I'm going to build a 6br but I am not sure if I have a good plan or not. I would like to start with a stevens action and send it into SSS to have them true and time the action as well as install one of their triggers and lug bolts. I was planning on getting a Pac-nor 1 in 8" either 26 or 28" and I would do the stock work myself. Would you recommend anything different and if so why?
Also, what reloading equipment would you suggest?
Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to build a gun and be unhappy with it.
Thanks,
Aaron

If longer range is in the works get the 28" tube for the extra FPS.
SSS action work is smooth, but be prepared for a loooong wait. Don't ask about a lead time or delivery date, and don't pay until they are done.
I was unable to get my Savage target action to reliably eject spent 6br shells. I ended up removing the ejector and pulling the shells off the extractor with my finger. You may have better luck with this, or it might not be an issue for you.
Good luck with your build! 6mmbr is a great round!

deerslayer13,

Sounds good but get http://www.stockadegunstocks.com/testimonials.html to do the work SSS will take for ever and take your money up front.
Do a search for SSS on this site.

Kevin Rayhill is great to deal with at stockade. He seems very honest with my dealings with him.

I would start with a three bolt single shot Savage Target action (Savage sells the action only), and skip the SSS adjustments until after you have shot it and decide whether or not you need it. I would also try the Savage AccuTrigger before replacing it. Mine shoots very reliably set at 7 oz. Make sure you get the barrel chambered with a reamer that has the right neck size and throat length for your intended purpose. For a 1 in 8 twist you will be shooting up to the 107 grain bullets, so will want to have the longer throat for them. A no turn neck with the newer brass is about 0.2704". Pac-Nor will chamber it for you, but you should check on what they actually have for a reamer. Attached is the PTG No-Turn reamer drawing for the new blue box Lapua. Not sure on the intended bullet weight. You may want to check on that with Dave Kiff from PTG.

On reloading dies, I use the Forster Bushing/Bump die for sizing, and the Forster Ultra Micometer seating die. They work well. For new Lapua brass you will probably need a 0.266 or 0.265" bushing in a Forster. Best to get both.

Ron,

I was looking at the single shot action and was wondering is it a lot slower than using a magazine? Also would you suggest getting the dual port or is that a waste of money?

Thanks,

Aaron

You would be best to ask that of the serious target shooting competitors. I shoot for accuracy and fun, but not speed. I selected the right bolt, left port option. I find it very convenient to feed and easy to catch the ejected case so the brass is not damaged landing on concrete. I also thought the single small port made for a more rigid action.

But, as I said, get the advice of those who have tried them all to see which arrangement is the fastest.

Aaron,
I am using a dual port PTA, it is fairly quick, if only it would eject the shells. But like I said I had to take the ejector out because it would eject only 40-60% of the time. That put a big wrench in the whole deal. If I knew that this would be the case I would have got a single port, for the reasons Ron said above.

If yours turns out to work for you then it is all good. On mine, no joy.

It is an accurate action, but I have had some issues with the trigger and ejector. Savages are easy to work on, and I like to tinker, so it is no big deal. I love the rifle and it is very accurate, but now I am going to build a custom.

Just be ready to tweak with your Savage if you have trouble. ;D

Aaron,

i was in the same boat just a few months ago...i'm having a 6BR built on a Borden tube action right now by Jim Borden and it's getting slapped into an R5 from Gary Eliseo. i'm putting it together for high power competition.

what are you looking to do with the rifle??? that's a big part of determining how you build it.

i want a gun for competing. and with a lot of research comes the answers. and mine were very similiar to yours. single shot? repeater? caliber? stock? trigger?? so many choices..but they start to get really easy when you focus on what you'll do with the rifle.

i want to compete across the course.....that ended up meaning slow and fast courses of fire...from standing sitting and prone positions. 6BR was a no brainer for me because it's such a great round. and a 1:8 barrel will throw everything a guy could want at 200,300 and 600 yards. i wanted the least amount of shop time loading and the most amount of time at my range. i can buy good brass from lapua...and good loads are easy to get set up in that caliber with good case life.

if you want to shoot benchrest...it's a totally different gun because it's a totally different discipline.

so like i said...how you build the rifle really rests on what you plan on doing with it.

hope that helps...and good luck with the build!!!!!

Thanks for all the replies, I will be using the gun mainly for target shooting at my local range along with some friendly competitions. Also, I will use it once in a while to do some varmint control.

cool. with that in mind stick with a repeater action...no real need there for a single shot rifle...especially if you plan on hunting with it. if you plan on shooting longer distances stick with a barrel that has a 1:8 twist...it'll throw everything from 90s to 107s great.

So since single shot actions are out, would you suggest getting a Stevens and getting a new trigger or just getting a savage with the accutrigger?

I wouldn't rule out the target action. with a heavy rifle the 1st shot is the one that will count. with that said, if you buy a regular savage with the accutrigger in a hunting rifle and put a lighter pull trigger in it you would have more money spent than the target action. the stevens 300.00- 330.00 odd dollars, with a fred moreo trigger 97.00 and recoil lug 28.00 is the cheap way to go. for a stock a choate tactical or a bell and carlson medalist work good. i have two stevens, one is a 6mmbr, the other a 6.5x284 and am happy with how well they shoot. cliffe

Be very careful ordering a new Savage target action. I recently ordered the dual port target action to go into a new BR stock that purchased. I was expecting the 4.4" screw spacing, since that is what I have on my LRPV. When the action arrived, it was the new 3.4" screw spacing. I was sick. What really pissed me off was that there was no mention of the change on the Savage website. Luckily I found a buyer for the new action, and found another action with the old 4.4" spacing.

Life is good again, Ken
