6mm XC 100 yard load?

Looking to shoot my 6mm XC match rifle on a reduced course 100 yard format.

Looking for the lightest bullets at the slowest velocity that will provide reasonable accuracy.

Want to avoid any recoil/barrel wear I can since I am not bucking wind at longer distances.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Tim

I use the Sierra 70 gr HPBT with 35 gr Varget in Tubb 2G or Norma 22-250 cases reformed to 6XC. Mild load and it shoots into the same hole out of my T2K. The 85 gr Sierra HPBT with 34.0 gr Varget is a winner @ 300.

Please explain this reduced course theory? Is this the idea that all shots are shot at 100 yard and the targets size is reduced so that each target although shot at 100 yeards looks like it were shot at the various distances? I think that is what a friend conveyed to me.

Hmmm. I don't like it. If you are only shooting 100 yards, and you just have to do well on targets that are smaller, you have no extra drop, no extra wind value, you have no extra time of flight, etc, then why use a cartridge that is designed to go 600 yarding. build up a gun that shoots 100 yards extremely well, and use a big bullet so that it whipes out scoring rings on small, reduced) targets... What you need is a .30 BR!

Paul,... Maybe I do have this reduced target thing figured.

Try 35.5 to 36.5 g of N135 with 65g FB bullets.

These worked great in my 1-8 twist 6-250,which is a very small hair bigger than the 6XC in the body length, same shoulder/base dia as 6XC) at 100 and 200 yds fire forming and shot some very small groups. Chrony'd at 3500 fps or so. It felt PPCish after 105 & 115's. There maybe a lower node there yet, but this is the area a tested the N135 in on these light bullets. The fire formed 308 URBR holds 50.3g of water for reference to your case volume.

My 6-250 on the left and a 6XC on the right

Here's a 100yd 5 shot with this load, no flags.

Here a 200 yd with this load, fire forming, again no flags.
The case on the URBR right has to trimmed and put thru the final die yet.

Hi guys, and thanks for all of the replies.

Re: reduced course matches, they largely involve attempting to duplicate the feel of high-power matches, without necessarily shooting BTHPs through the condominiums etc that are frequently encountered 600 yards away from rifle ranges in the suburbs :)

Re: 30 BR, not a dumb idea but I am not aware of a lot of 30 BR repeaters - will look into it.

Re: loads, thanks very much all and I will experiment with your suggestions.

thx again

Another thing to try, especially for practice/fire forming loads, which is what you are probably after for 100 yard use) is the Data 74 powder and some of the others that are out. We are using a 35.0 gr load of Data 74 for fireforming new Win brass into 6XC. With the 70gr bullets we are getting something like 3300 out of them. We arent trying to go fast but to get 99% forming and accuracy, thats what we settled on. After some early testing, seems to work great...and boy is that powder cheap compared to my usual loads with Varget for fireforming!

For the guys that dont understand the 100 yard course thing...we only shoot the 100 yarders to get trigger time, fireform brass and play. I dont really know anyone that "chooses" to shoot 100 yard matches!! But, around here, two weekends out of 4, thats the only game in town. Sucks but its better than golf!
