6mm vs Swift on prairie dogs ?

.

Using bullets in the 55 to 65 grain range...

How would a 6mm wildcat with similar case capacity as a standard 220 Swift compare to the standard 220 Swift on prairie dogs under 300 yards ?

What 6mm wildcat with a 30/06 headsize comes closest to the 220 Swift case capacity ?

The 22/250 Ackley Improved has a little less capacity than the Swift.

My 6mm Remington, using a stiff Varget load, shoots 58g V-Max bullets at ~4050 fps, averaging around .5" groups. The barrel has a 9" twist and accuracy would probably improve with a slower twist. The effect on crows is spectacular.

The 6mm Lee Navy has a .448 case head?

The 6mm Remington holds about 7-8 grains more water than the .220 Swift. CJ6's first named cartridge is obviously the closest. Simply necking up the .220 to 6mm would provide nearly identical case capacity and significantly better ballistics.

Ta dah!! The return of the 6MM Lee Navy cartridge (the parent round for the 220 Swift)

Prarrie Dogging with hot shooting rifles..

My experiences with Prarrie Doggin has been high volume shooting. I wore out a .243 in two days and wore out a .223 in 5 days.

I had shooting between 100 yards and 900 yards. and shot on the average 1200 rounds per day. By rotating rifles (4) They could cool down. I would clean about every two hours of shooting.

I found a heavy barreled .223 with 50 grain SX bullets running about 3200fps worked well. In ten days of shooting I used just over 12,000 rounds.

Yes, shooting a .243, 220 Swift, 22.250AI, would work beautifully but barrel life and brass expense have become an factor for me.

How much splatter do you want? I use a 6mm Ackley with a 87 gr V Max....definitely get the chewy chunks spread around..... easier on windy days and shoots fairly flat.... +3200 fps

My wife prefers a 22-250 Ackley and she can hold her own with it. 50 HP at 3800 fps it kills them but it just doesn't toss them like the 6.

I have shot a 233 for years and use to say that the 223 can do anything the 22-250 can do with less powder..... NOT! There is a difference between the smack - it is called +400 fps with the same bullet.

I can't say for the swift....but the 22-250 Ackley is close to being in the same category as the swift. Get one of each and go have fun....come up with your own conclusions and let us know.

I like to shoot prairie dogs with a 257 Weatherby with Hornady 75-grain VMAX from fifty yards or less.

But the barrel gets too hot sometimes.

Hammer, could be the cartridge you want is the .240 Cobra, the .220 AI necked up to 6mm.

I have shot chucks with .22-250, .220 Swift, .243, 6mm Rem, .25-06 and for pure spectacular pinwheeling backflips, my money goes with the Swift.

Just bought my second Swift, a 700 Rem VSSF. What a beauty rifle. Working up loads for it in the cold Winter air. Keeps the barrel cool. When the barrel is shot out, I am thinking of the .240 Cobra. Never had one.

Have never used my 6AI on chucks. Use it only for F Class to save the barrel.

Like Gallagher ?

The closest I've shot one was less than five feet. He never saw me. There was a mess with that one.

We shoot ground squirrels with a 6br and i got pieces on the truck from a close shot. ;D

I like the 6br for high volume shooting. It cools quick and the barrels last pretty well. Very accurate with 75gr vmax and launches the rodents. Anything under 400 yards is in serious trouble. P-dogs are bigger so should be easier to hit at extended ranges.

I have used a 243 on pasture maggots with explosive results. 55 grain nosler bt. is devasting at 3800fps. The 220 is also devasting and will produce red mist delights. Loaded a 220 last year with a 36 grain barnes bullet at 4450 fps, very destructive and spectacular. However the hands down winner so far has been a 257 Weatherby with 60 to 70 grain bullets at 4000 fps or close to it. There is nothing left , even jack rabbits just disappear, you may find a ear or foot the rest is just plain missing. All the barrels get very hot, even thought they look like old ford truck axels. Would suggest a 223 to let bigger calibers cool off. On a three day hunt we expect to shoot at least 2,000 rounds if the dogs are up. The 223 is just cheaper to run. If you have a Savage you can just screw on a new barrel at the end of the year without breaking the bank.

If you have a Savage, you just carry extra barrels into the prairie dog towns with you.

You change out barrels every fifty or so shots to allow one barrel to soak in your favorite barrel cleaning concoction while you shoot another barrel.

Or you look at the next shot and your barrel caddy says, "This calls for a 222-1/2 Remington with a 13-3/4 inch twist." So you unscrew your 20 VarTarg barrel and slide on the proper barrel for this 267 yard shot at a three-year-old bull prairie dog. But the next shot might call for your 14-221 Walker with its 11-1/2 grain hollow point and it takes but a minute to have the proper barrel for the job. You wouldn't expect Tiger to use the wrong tool, would you ?

LOL! Oh, that would be too sweet if a fellow were blessed with enough cash to afford such an endeavor. Whos your barrel caddy? lol
