6mm Super LR

Has anyone had any experience with this new Robert Whitley cartridge? From what I have read it seems to be fairly easy to load but I can't find any data to go by. Thanks for any comments

Contact Mr. Whitley, he is on here and is willing to share info, good guy!! If I am correct his name on here is "RCW"

Shot two full seasons with that cartridge so far. It's falling down simple to load for and very accurate. I hope this helps,
Lloyd

I am seriously considering this cartride for my next build. I have read the writeup on Roberts site several times and really like the features of this cartridge. The only drawback I saw was he possible problems with using 243 Lapua brass. The Lapua brass would be a must for me.

Do a search for the 6SuperX or 6mm SuperX. That's what it used to be called. The name was recently changed due to Winchester owning the name SuperX.

Robert`s forum name is "rcw3". I am in the process receiving the Redding F/L bushing die from him for the 6 SLR.

After sizing a .243 case I will check dimensions against Kiff print # 9857. PT&G will e-mail that print to you upon request. I will probably go with the .075 freebore and 1.5 degree throat angle. When satisfied in my mind that I have the reamer design I want, I will order it from PT&G.

When my 6AI is shot out from F Class competition at the end of this coming summer, the 30 inch 8 twist barrel will become a 28 inch barrel chambered for the 6 Super LR.

Will be using Winchester brass. Have never been fascinated by the Euro brass. At 1000 yards reading the wind is more important than "perfect" brass. In F Class competition, I have beaten a lot of Lapua and Norma brass with Winchester brass.

I have not shot this but was looking at a 243 AI and the deminsons look very close to me but I could be wrong, if so someone please correct me.

deadwood, the 6 Super LR retains the original body taper of the .243. In other words, it is not blown out or improved.

The 6 SLR has one grain less case capacity than the standard .243 because the top of the shoulder is pushed down to give a 30 degree angle instead of the original 20 degree. This has the side benefit of giving a longer neck for more flexible bullet seating.

The theory being that the 30 degree shoulder is easier on barrels than the 20 degree. And with the proper powder selection I am anticipating almost the same velocity with 107 MKings in the 6SLR as compared to the original .243.

I have a box car load of low usage Winchester .243 brass so the 6 SLR is a natural for me.

Thanks for clarification guys for I too was searching for an alternative to the .308 and had also considered the 260 but from what I have been told [corrected] about the 6 SLR it has moved to the top of my list. Thanks for the lesson.

People may need to be aware, that for whatever reason (and I am not faulting one reamer maker or the other) there are typically practical differences between a JGS reamer and a Kiff/PTG reamer in the throat area. Typically with a Kiff/PTG reamer with a 6mm and a one and a half degree throat angle, to hit the same OAL's with bullets as a chamber cut with a JGS reamer, you need about a .015" - .020" longer free bore than the JGS reamer. If you are considering the bullets OAL's posted on my website of the JGS 6mm Super LR/S reamer with the .075" free bore, and you want to duplicate them with a Kiff/PTG reamer, you might wish to consider getting the Kiff/PTG reamer with a .095" free bore.

The 6mm Super LR/S reamer (with the .075" throat) posted on the website was also set up for shooting in a semi auto (AR-10, LR-308, etc.) and has a little more generous body dimensions (i.e. by .001") than the 6mm Super LR reamer, so if you are going to run it in a bolt gun you may wish to consider using the 6mm Super LR reamer (i.e. the one with the .120" free bore) but with the shorter free bore you want. The little bit tighter body of the 6mm Super LR reamer will make it so you won't need to work the brass as much on the resize of fired cases.

You can always e-mail me your reamer drawings and I will pass on my thoughts.

Typically .243 Win Load data is very workable with the 6mm Super LR.

Mr. Whitley thanks for chiming in, with all that has been said and clarification of your two reamers, I would like to move forward with my bolt action project using your 6 SLR reamer. I will contact you very soon for more details and ordering instructions.

The only problem I see with this is you would have to either get a new bolt or, have your bolt face opened up to accept the .243 case head! If your shooting a Savage you can interchange bolt faces pretty easily on your own!
