6MM Remington Rebarrel Questions

Looking to put a new barrel on an old 6mm Remington. Thinking about a 1:7.5 twist 27". I already have brass and good dies for the 6MM. Would it be possible to push a 115 to 2,950 with this set up? Should I just put a 1:8 twist 26" and shoot 105 or 107s from it? It is currently a 1:8 twist 29" Shilen on a Rem 700 long action. It used to push 105 to 3,100 FPS and shoot 1/2 MOA at 1,000 yards. The 29" barrel is cumbersome and shot out. I would really enjoy a shorter one, but would the velocity suffer too much? Thank you for your time and thoughts. The rifle will be used in F class.

The 6mm bullets can be awesome at 1000 yards as long as the wind is blowing. 6mm is not ideal for 1000 yards. Consider the heavier 7mm selections for 1000 yards. If you insist on shooting 6mm at 1000 yards, consider the Berger 109 hybrid target in a 6 Dasher from a 27-29” Bartlein 5R 1:7.5” barrel. This a proven combination and will dominate at 600 yards and be very competitive at 1000 yards, as long as the wind isn’t too heavy or extremely switchy. 33.1gr of RL-15 will put you close to 2980fps.

Maybe not exactly what you’re looking for but a 6AI will easily get those velocities and then some. Downside is fire forming and a new sizing die.

The Lee seater dies work on the Ackley Improved version. For sizing I use Lee collet neck die and a Redding body die.

Makes very straight ammo.

Never tried it, but from what I’ve heard some dies work but not others. If the regular seating die does work, I’d check run out. Sorry I don’t have a better answer.

Just rebarrel to 6MM Remington and work your loads you'll get the velocity you're looking for it's a 65,000 PSI cartridge.

I have pushed 105's to close to 3200 in a 6mm Creedmoor so a 6mm Rem has a 2 or 3 grain more case capacity advantage. Shot excellent at 1K in PRS type shooting. When the wind starts kicking the
game changes for everyone regardless of caliber.

I would go AI, either chamber will get your target velocity, anf 27.5" is my preffered length with the AI version. To me it well worth it, esier on brass with no neck trimming after you form it!

14 grains of bullseye powder with cream of wheat, corn cob media or any suitable filler then plug the case mouth with paraffin, beeswax, bar soap whatever and shoot. No wasting bullets or wear on the new barrel! Only way I fireform mine after trying it.


1-8 will work with 108 Bergers and the like, and actually get you about 3300 fps. But accuracy fails after about 3050 fps. I tried everything but these bullets don't like those extra RPM's, probably why 600 yard BR guys stick to the BR size cases, If you want racing speed go to 1-10 and keep em under 100 grains, 3400 is easy and accuracy will hold up with fewer RPM's.


Like I said near 3300 with them 108's light bolt lift, but after 3000-3050 groups just continue to open up with any powder I tried. Either cartridge like I said will give you that speed.

Forum Boss: The Benchrest Game is different than F-Class because the target is not pulled (or marked digitally) between shots. Consequently, if you get all 5 shots off before a wind change you can get an awesome group. Much harder to do with F-Class targets being marked after each shot.



The quote was that the 6mm bullets are not ideal for 1,000 yards, not whether it's for F-Class or Benchrest. The example given merely illustrates the use of the 6mm bullets successfully at 1,000 yards.

Trying to discuss the 'ideal' bullet in a forum such as this simply invites a multitude of pages of opinions. I shoot the 6mm Rem. AI in a couple of venues although it is not the only cartridge I use. I also use the CheyTac variations out past 2,000 yards.

I would think that the Dasher is easier to develop consistent load development than the 6MM Reming due to the shape of the cartridge.

I would say that the shooter sets and holds the record, they just happen to be shooting a Dasher. Next year (if we see future development) it will be something else.

We are all entitled to our opinions. I certainly wouldn't mention yours to anyone who shoots the 6PPC and I don't see many records which don't use the Dasher in the specific venues of competition but I'm not going to run a complete search either.

I am super grateful for the development work done by competitive shooters, really interesting and some very useful cartridges come out of it. It's just not my cup of tea! I wouldn't give up my CQB rifle in 6MM ARC for anything and the developments that lead to the 6MM ARC came from competitive shooting. Like I said useful cartridges.

However in a case of first and second place situation and from my experience of shooting way out there in the field we both know that the difference relies on a myriad of factors, a brief change in the wind eddy current, difference in bullet sorting techniques are examples and the cartridge is just one part. I mean my God these boys are shooting groups smaller then a handball out passed a half a mile.

The Dasher is a cartridge with great competitive performance potential, however I would hate to see a lemming like adherence to what the in crowd shoots hold up progress.

That should have said if the wind ISN’T blowing. I love our 6 Dashers but in F open class shooting at 1000 yards, it isn’t the ideal round to win. In the last 5 years shooting F open class 1000 yard events, I’ve seen only one 6 dasher win in over 15 events.

I am pushing 2,000 with mine so far. It still will shoot 1/2 to 3/4 MOA. but the small bug holes are gone. I have just been messing around and found a load with Reloader 17 that will push 80 SPT 3,700 fps, with no pressure. The barrel has mostly had 107 MK and 105 VLD pushed through using N160. The 107 around 3,050 and the 105 to 3,100. The barrel I have now is 29" Shilen 1:8 twist. It is starting to have more and more flyers. It is a hell of a varmint gun with the 80 SPT however, it is cumbersome.

I've been shooting juiced 6MM Remington loads for nearly 40 years for varmint shooting, by juiced I'm talking 3,900 FPS with Hornady 75 grain. I got 2,000 rounds out of the first barrel and as a crow/chuck shooter that took many years. I'm not home but from memory I'm using Reloader 19 and a compressed load. It's just my opinion but I use a 26" barrel and rather then using a wildcat I'd rebarrel my 6 Remington with a longer barrel rather then a wildcat.

I would class it as ovoerbore, ivebeen shooting my 6AI with 90 gr tipped game kings and 53 gr of H4831sc. I'm at 750 rounds through it. Regularly prints .300" 4 shot groups. That said....it's never been shot in completion or rapid strings if fire, never had the barrel heat up. It's a hot rod.....enjoy it.......when the barrel goes....replace it.

I have a 6 XC, std 30° but in a .400" long neck. Hardly any throat wear after 800 rds w max loads. Like under .004. Using Palma brass worked down is very much worth a gander.
