6mm Remington Imp

I have a Remington 40x with a 27 lg x 8 twist heavy barrel in 6mm Improved.

I would like some accurate loading data with 80 - 115 gr bullets. Can anyone help me out?

Frank

Hi Frank, I have 2 6AI's, both of mine are 8 twist and I shoot 105-107 class bullets. Thats where I would go with your 8 twist barrel. The 6AI is a very accurate cartridge and can be shot at ultra long range, and bucks the wind very well. I am using Hodgdon 4831SC in my first build with 48.0 grains under a 105 Lapua Scenar and Federal 210GMM primer. (Mild load) Getting an honest 3200 FPS on the nose and seems to be the node that it likes. I could drive them faster but if it isn't broke I tend to not try to fix it. Deadly at 600 yards. There is some info on the home page if you punch in the search function "6AI". Richard Franklin has an article on 6AI's there and a few others will pop up. Also Google "Mike J's 6MM Ackley Improved Loading page" Tons of info on all bullet weights and pics of rifles to boot. Plus there are more than a few members here that will chime in that own this mighty fine cartridge.

Thank you, 40X :
I've loved the 6mm since 1970. I had my first 600 Reminton rebarreled with a 26" varmit weight barrel. It was very accurate (3 in 9/16 at 200) but i traded it off on a race car. I've had 2 others on Remington 660's since then but, not near as accurate. This is my first improved so, I have high hopes for it. Has anyone used WC852 with it (4831 rate)? I have 8 lb's of that to try.

Frank

Both RE-19 and RE-22 work well in my 1:9 twist with the 105 Amax, 105 Berger VLDs, and 107 SMK. About 3200 fps was my best accuracy as well. Could go faster but groups open up. However, the 95 Berger VLD shoots unreal in my with IMR4381 at almost 3500 fps. Luck, Tim

Frank, I don't know of anyone who has used the WC852. I have no clue where to start with that powder. My first build loved RL-22 also, but seemed to me to be a pretty dirty powder and it did carbon foul on me after about 162 rounds. Got the gunk out and switched to H4831SC and gun is just as accurate and does not foul nearly as bad.

As Tiny 68 said, RL-22/4831 class is great with 105's, if shooting 87-95 class, I would try the RL-19, H4350, Viht. N160 burn rate class.

As to your WC852, maybe email Richard Franklin customrifles@hughes.net He has built a few hundred of the 6MM AI'S and owns a couple. But I have a feeling he will sway you over to any of the powders we have mentioned so far. I just ordered a stock from him and he is fast to reply to email.

Used a 6AI 30 inch 8 twist MacLennon barrel in F Class. Great cartridge. Very accurate out to 1000 yds. Got 3250 with RL22 and 107 SMK.

Barrel is shot out after one season so am rebarreling to 6SLR for hopefully two years of life.

I thought that Richard sold his stock business to Gregg West ? Did he buy it back ? I'm in need of another one of his stocks ?

Frank, I wouldn't give up on the 115s just because you didn't get a lot of replies from those who're using them. The only downside to trying DTAC 115s is that they're sold only in 500ct. boxes - but I wouldn't worry about that, as they've shot great in several of my 6x47s & 6XCs. I've gotten very good results with DTACs in the one-and-only 1:8tw 6x47 I own - the others all have 1:7.5 Kriegers or 1:7.8 Bartleins. I would expect that your 1:8 (assuming that it's a true 1:8, and not slower) 6mmAI would drive the 115s plenty fast enough to reliably stabilize them.

You could also buy a 100ct. box of Berger's 115VLD, but I've had difficulty in getting them to shoot as well as the DTACs, whether jumped or jammed. What I'd really like to see is for Berger to come out with a Hybrid or LR BT 115.

Thank you Flatlander,
I just ordered some 90 gr fmjbt's to try from Graf's. They had the DTAC's for $25 per 100 in stock but, I've only heard stuff about the 105 - 107's so, I didn't order any. Of all the calibers, I would have thought the the 115 would work best in the 6AI and 6-284. I did think it strange that no one has said anything about the 115's. Just got the gun and the weather isn't great and may not get much better so, I haven't taken it out yet but, I have 85 gr bt Sierra and Speer and 1 box of 85 gr FB Win match, 100 FB and bt hunting bullets, 105 Hornaday and 107 sierra.

Does anyone have a good 115 DTAC load to share?

Frank

6mm Crusader has the same internal case volume as 6mmAI and is also based on 6mm Rem. I posted a ton of loads for it in this thread:
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1014170

My recommendation would be 52-52.5 gr. Retumbo with a 115 DTAC load for a match load and 48-49gr. H4831SC with an 87 VMAX for varmints.
