Yes it's a bolt. They fit in the mag fine with the big jump. When I started close to the lands, of course they were single feed. My groups are 1/2-3/4" at 100 yds. That is just fine for my purposes. It's my hunting rifle.

Mikemci, I take it yours is a bolt gun which would be easier to single load. I normally start 0.010” off the lands in my bolt gun but this ol’relic even with the mag inserted, the bolt will not lock open. So I started at SAMMI spec and worked my way out to the lands

How far away from the lands have you.gone?
You say you can't get it to group, maybe you haven't gone far enough, is my point.

Mikemci, I checked my dimensions again, I think I was a little off, I think I forgot to zero my micrometer the last time I used it. Base to lands is 2.4005” and COL is 2.8710”.

I agree with the maybe you have not gone far enough. I am shooting the Sierra 100gr sp & started at sammi spec of 2.825 so I could magazine feed. Shortening by .005 per group I only fired 4 groups to find the sweet spot. 2.815 was it for me. By 2.810 it started getting bigger again. This is a factory Remington, 26" varmint barrel, Jewel trigger. I am loading 48.0grs of RL 26 in Hornady brass, with Federal 210 match primer. For me this will shoot in the 1s for shots, the 3s for 4 shots and the low 5s for 5 shots regularly. Good luck with your project & good shooting.

you need a new crown in a bad way

Dusty, that's what I was thinking also, the pattern of the groups looks like a shot gun pattern. Should I do a target crown or a recessed crown?

Gunsmith should examine the first couple of inches of the muzzle. That muzzle has seen a lot of time on the floor mats of a pick up truck. Not unusual to have to cut off 1/2" or so as moisture has got in the muzzle and rust is the result.

Well I took the rifle to a friend, he’s not anti-gun but he doesn’t own one either, who use to be a machinist. He has some custom auto parts for people since he retired 15 years ago. So I asked him if he had the tooling to recrown the barrel. This is what he was able to do by hand at his home

Thats gotta be better but i can still see some ruff stuff in there. Stick a q-tip in there and drag it back out to see if theres a bur.

I did the Q-tip procedure and no snag at all. That barrel has probably never been cleaned properly due to it being a semi auto. Even with the magazine in place the bolt will not lock open. I noticed under the hand guard there is a massive amount of carbon buildup, as well as inside the action. The gun needs to be professionally taken apart and cleaned, in my opinion.
