6mm Rem

Is the model 700 short action,2.85" overall length) long enough for a custom 6 mm remington ? I think that the action will limit how far out I can seat heavy bullets,105-107 Gr).

What are some typical C.O.L. for 6mm rem./6mmAI with 105/107gr bullets?

Any thoughts on a recommended action length for 6mm Rem/6mm AI ?

I reload for my father in-law's Rem 700 s/a in 6mm rem. Loading for coyotes, I chose to use the Nosler 70g BT. Rounds loaded to reach the lands aren't even close to fitting in the magazine.

To give you an idea, here's a few measurements. Note: I'm using the stoney point comparator to measure OAL.

To lands: 2.500"
Rounds function in mag at: 2.375"

If you are going to be shooting as a single shot, I don't see a problem but if you want to use a mag......a longer action will be in order.

Factory Rem 700's chambered for the 6mm Remington are short actions. Works fine if a fellow loads to approximately factory cartridge length. I've loaded up to 105 grain bullets w/no problems. Limit my loads to about a 2.8" overall length and it works out real well. Same length as my .308 Win loads destined for a short-action Remington rifle.

Would be interesting to build a long-action rifle for the 6mm Rem and load those bullets long...

Thanks for the info. Here's what I am thinking:

I am going to go with the Rem Short Action with 6 mm Remington. With Berger 105 gr, I plan on a 2.95" COL, with the chamber reamed for the bullet to be seated out to .01 " from the lands. These rounds I will feed individually,e.g., no use of magazine).

This will also allow me to use the magazine with 70-87 gr bullets loaded to a COL of 2.825, understanding the lead to lands may be 0.145 " or so.

If this was to be the basis for my custom, what barrel twist should I use, or am I trying too much to get the best of both worlds. I am not necessarily looking for maximum BR accuracy, at least not with the lighter bullets.

Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance.

If you are planning on using the magazine with the 105's and touch the lands, you are screwed!

I have had at least a dozen 700 in 6mm Rem that I shot p. dogs with. I used them as single shots almost from the very beginning because of the length of the magazine and the length of the throat.

The 6mm Rem cartridge would be better on the long action. In fact, in 1987, Rem made a special run of the 257 roberts on a long action and they command a premium if you can ever find one, of course the 257 Roberts is the parent cartridge of the 6mm Rem.

I had a reamer made with zero freebore to shoot the lighter bullets in the 6mm Rem, I still had very little magazine left on a seated bullet.

If you are starting over from scratch, you would be well advised to go with a shorter cartridge such as a 243 AI which has zero problems feeding from the magazine.

Good luck

I really like the 6mm Remington and I do have a Rem Short action. I would love to combine the two, however, I am starting to lean to the .308 win. I am mostly looking for a rifle and can shoot a lot and out to 1000 m.

Still undecided but leaning .308 win

The .308 has a lot to recommend it. Long barrel life and good accuracy are two excellent reasons.

I shoot more .308 than any other centerfire rifle cartridge.

On the other hand, the little 6mmBR and versions of it have done very, very well out to 1000 yards... Amazingly well actually...

How does the 6MM case compare to the 243imp for capacity??? Wouldn't the 6MM be a good case for slow burning powders and the 115DTCs instead of using or modifying the 243 cases for more capacity??? Just a thought.

How would the 6MM REM work with H1000 and the 115DTCs? Been thinking about the same thing. Has anyone tried this?

I have a SA SPF Predator action to build on. It has an extended cutout but it gains only 0.1 with a Wyatt mag box. Don't think that is enough to run the heavy bullets thru the mag. Anyone know? The other downside is no Lapua brass.

Will use this action to build a 223, 308, 6mm something and a 7mm something. Lots of good choices out there. Looking at the 6.5x47 necked down versions. Have a light weight 7mm08 now and leaning that way.

Also have a LA Predator with a 30-06 barrel on that I could use for the 6MM REM. My plans are to add a 7x57 barrel for it this spring. The 6 could be done at the same time.

Hi Raptor,

The 6mm Remington case has good capacity which is approx. 54-55 grains of water. The .243AI has a capacity of approx. 57-58 grains of water for a comparison for you. The .243 Win. will generally have better quality brass available for it than the 6mm Remington does, since Norma quit making the 6mm brass quite some time ago. The best thing to do is to try the combination and see what it would do for you.

Cordially,
Bob Blaine
