6mm Rem Long Action

Mike Johnson of Shooting Specialties in Chinook, Mt built this Remington 700 LA in a 6mm Remington with extended bolt knob.for me. It sports a Lilja 26" fluted 3 groove 8 twist barrel. It is topped with a Vortex Razor LHT 3-15x42 mounted on an Leupold 20 MOA rail all set in a Mesa Precision Arms Carbon Fiber Altitude stock, with a Short Action Precision 2 round shell holder on the side. All supported with a Harris Bi-Pod and a War Horse Develpment canvas Clede bag. This set up is pushing a Berger 105gn VLD at an avg 2868fps out of Browning brass propelled by 42gn of H4831SC and sparked by large Federal match primers. Will be interesting to see what it can do at 1000 yds. Should make a good varmint rifle.

That seems slow for a 105 gr bullet in 6mm, unless it's the accuracy. Might want to try other powders to see if there is more velocity with acceptable accuracy, a little 6 dashers run at of accuracy in the 2950 to 3020 fps area. I can run 3132 with 107 gr MK in the dasher, and 110 gr at 3085 fps is my go long steel load. There are some new DTAC bullets out in 115gr ring nose, I can run the old coated 115s at 3020 fps.
I run a 700 long action in 308 Win, out of detachable 30-06 mags long throated 8 twist barrel for heavy bullet an run the 200 gr MK .715 bc at 2856 Ave fps, and the 225 gr ELDM at 2675 fps .777 bc. And the 230 Atips but with less accuracy so far. Your long action should allow you to seat long, increasing powder capacity, and trying slower powders RL 26 has been fast in many calibers...6 mm Remington, RL 26 48.6 gr for a 100 gr bullet get 3230 fps for a MAXIMUM load 24" barrel. So work up from 43.8 gr RL26 with your 105 gr Berger, check velocity and accuracy to find what if any are acceptable...or Not... if you like your load use it...but there is more performance available...if you so desire. Most of all, Have fun, with the new gun.

Short actions rob the case of powder capacity with all but the lightest bullets. For example, look at how deeply seated a factory 100 gr. hunting bullet is to fit in a Rem. short action. Even worse when using the long skinny high BC bullets. By using a longer action, you can throat it so that the bullet is all in the neck, giving you more powder space. For hunting, I use a Mexican Mauser small ring 98 action (originally for the 7mm Mauser) with a longer throat than SAAMI and it works great with both 6mm Rem. and .257 Robt. Both of these calibers in the past have been factory barreled in short actions by Rem. and have mediocre performance compared to what is possible out of these cases with the proper throating. I do use a short action on PD rifles since mine are single shot and not magazine fed.
Question: as long as the cartridge is fed single shot, it should not be an issue w heavy or lighter bullets and COAL?

I made a decision that one if my 03 actions is going to be a standard length 6MM Remington. I'll have the throat cut to a pre made dummy cartridge.

I can leave it to my son when I kick!

This is my Second 6mm AI, built on a savage long action, IBI carbon fiber barrel, and an ag comp carbon fiber stock. This one is meant to be a reasonable weight carry rifle for deer and coyotes. I also have two 788 6mm rems, one in mint shape that was a lucky find, the other passed down by my uncle, shows wear but shoots very well. Long action is a must with the heavies if you want to feed from a magazine.

I agree that there should be another node around 3100 fps in the standard 6mm Rem. case. My 6mm AI with 108 Berger Elite Hunters and 106 Hotenstiens would go 3300+ but an 8 twist barrel will end producing best accuracy around 3050 to 3100.

I also with the tad more capacity utilized 7828 for my best efforts. 4831 worked great just gave up a bit of top end speed. I would think you powder choice is about as good as it gets for the standard 6mm Rem case.

One thing the Dasher boys don't mention is the throat life of the barrels, and the lack of case life when they sand on them hard enough to squeeze 3000 fps out of them with 105 class bullets.

You can certainly stand on it more and still see better barrel life that the Dashers, and way more with your load, as well as good brass life!

I scrapped my 6mm AI build, shortening the 27.5" 8 twist Krieger to 26", and rechambering it to a standard 6BR. Would have chosen the 6BRA, but my gunsmith didn't have tha AI reamer.

I call mine a Dasher Beater, on my Savage Axis action in a laminated SSS BR stock @ 14.2 lbs. I use a 95 grain CUSTOM VLD within 8 BC of the 105 and 106 bullets. I get 3007 av. fps, with single digit ES's, and do it with 20 grains less powder than the 106 6mm bullets in the 6mm AI.

This gave me as flat shooting as the 106 and 108 loads but harder on throat life at the same speed. That little 14 lb Savage easily turns in 2" groups out to 600 and would do better with a better shooter!

I would step it up, or if you want those velocities, go to 6BR, more efficient at those velocities. But you can stick with the more sedate speeds, if accuracy suites, and enjoy great brass and barrel life! It's great today to have so many options to attain the same results!!!!!

And need to mention, do it while enjoying one sweet looking rig,,,, Thumbs Up Emoji, HD Png Download - vhv.png
