6mm Rem Long Action

Mike Johnson of Shooting Specialties in Chinook, Mt built this Remington 700 LA in a 6mm Remington with extended bolt knob.for me. It sports a Lilja 26" fluted 3 groove 8 twist barrel. It is topped with a Vortex Razor LHT 3-15x42 mounted on an Leupold 20 MOA rail all set in a Mesa Precision Arms Carbon Fiber Altitude stock, with a Short Action Precision 2 round shell holder on the side. All supported with a Harris Bi-Pod and a War Horse Develpment canvas Clede bag. This set up is pushing a Berger 105gn VLD at an avg 2868fps out of Browning brass propelled by 42gn of H4831SC and sparked by large Federal match primers. Will be interesting to see what it can do at 1000 yds. Should make a good varmint rifle.

Very nice looking rig! I have always liked the 244/6mm too.Bet it shoots great at that node.Im sure the varmints won’t like it much though.Just started testing H4831sc in my 25-06 with the 85 NBT.I was very pleased with an average speed of 3412 from my old used 24” Ruger 1V. I bet you can find another node as you creep up on max with that beautiful 26” Lilja.Look forward to seeing some Varmint photos.

Might look at a higher node as 17VLD suggests. Your velocity is around what the guys with various versions of the 6BR's are getting. The 6mm Rem. should be capable of much more with the heavy bullets. Years ago I ran the Sierra 100 BT at close to 3100 with IMR 4350 in a 27" 40X, and we have a better selection of slower powders today.

what vintage is the long action receiver? looks great.

Very nice, I'm a big fan of the 244/6mm in a long action also.
I had Bob Green build one For me on a Defiance Deviant LA but in 6mmAI with a 8 twist 26" Bartlien barrel I've taken ground hogs out to 800 yards with the 105 Amax.
Have fun with yours

R#19 is what I used, much higher speeds with tiny groups! H is too slow for the lighter weight bullets.

I have two Rem VLS in 6mmRem. Both have short actions. What's the advantage of a long action?
Short actions rob the case of powder capacity with all but the lightest bullets. For example, look at how deeply seated a factory 100 gr. hunting bullet is to fit in a Rem. short action. Even worse when using the long skinny high BC bullets. By using a longer action, you can throat it so that the bullet is all in the neck, giving you more powder space. For hunting, I use a Mexican Mauser small ring 98 action (originally for the 7mm Mauser) with a longer throat than SAAMI and it works great with both 6mm Rem. and .257 Robt. Both of these calibers in the past have been factory barreled in short actions by Rem. and have mediocre performance compared to what is possible out of these cases with the proper throating. I do use a short action on PD rifles since mine are single shot and not magazine fed.
