6mm Rem in Savage 10FP?

I swear I tried the search function but with no luck. I have a 20" barrel Savage 10FP 308 that I enjoy shooting. The rifle shoots well but I think the factory barrel is holding me back,fouls more than I think it should, I swear I see tool marks, and I have a FN PBR in the works in 308). I was thinking I would like to rebarrel with a Shilen in 6mm Remington but cannot figure out if I need a long action to house this round and heavy bullets,105s and up). Main goal is just fun shooting and something a little different than 308. Can I stuff a heavy bullet 6mm Rem in my 10FP action? Thanks for any input.

You can make it work, I would prefer a long action for a repeater though. You can send Shilen a dummy round and have them throat accordingly. The Savage short action mag box is only ~.6" longer than a 6 Rem case so the bullets will be seated deep.

I would strongly suggest the long action for the 6mm Rem. I have owned 3 different Rem 700s in the 6mm Rem and none of them could be seated to touch the lands. I built a Savage around a LA Stevens as my first Savage project rifle. I have +10 barrels now for 2 different actions and I switch barrels routinely depending on what I want today. Here it is with a 28" 1:12 Shilen Select Match in a 6mm Rem SAMMI minimum chamber. I also have a 6mm Ackley Improved barrel for it in a 1:9 twist. It is now a 223 for my son to hunt with this season. LA all the way unless you only want to shoot the 70s and smaller. I made up a bunch of brass for my 6Rem using RWS 7x57 as parent brass. Much tougher stuff and you can drive a 75 gr VMax into the future it goes so fast..... well really I can get over 3650 fps with the 28" barrel.

Thanks for the replies. I want to shoot heavy bullets so I guess I will look at 243AI for my short action Savage. If,ha ha "when") I get a long action I will build up a 6.5x55 but I sure do like what I read about 6mm Rem.
