6mm Rem and Bergers???

ImBIllT

I building a 6mm Rem for pronghorn and have absolutely LOVED the results I’ve been getting from Berger bullets on game. I’m not sure any of the Berger hunting billets can handle 6mm Rem velocities from a 1-8” twist barrel though. Here are my questions:

1) Has anyone experienced mid-air blowups with 6mm Berger hunting bullets, and if so, at what velocity, barrel length and twist did it occur?

2) Has anyone shot any game with the Berger Hybrid target bullets in excess of 3000 fps, and how did the results compare to VLD Hunting bullets?

Thanks in advance. I’m not looking for suggestions of non-Berger bullets at this time. First I want to make a decision on whether Berger offers a bullet that would meet my needs. If not, I’ll go down the rabbit hole of alternatives later.

I was running berger 87 gr hunting vlds and 95 gr berger classic hunters out of my 6mm rem AI 8 twist, both chronod at just hair over 3500 FPS and were very accurate, never had any blow ups in mid air.

Excellent! Barrel length?

I've shot 6AI 8 twist with 105 Hybrids at 3350 in 600 yds matches (HOT BARREL !) With no jacket failure/ blow ups.

Kills whitetail DRT.

I love it! Hunting hybrids or target Hybrids? Barrel length?

Everything I’ve shot with the hunting VLDs has left lung soup in the chest cavity instead lung chunks like ballistic tips. My fear on the target hybrid is that it’ll hold together too well.

Target Hybrids.
26".
I've shot whitetail with 6mm, 6.5mm, 7mm and 30 cal Target Hybrids with 100% one shot kills out to 400 yards. All were over well over 3100 fps muzzle velocity.

Works equally well on lung and high shoulder shots.

I'd rather hunt with target Hybrids at magnum velocities and thinner jacket bullets at slower velocities.

I can’t argue with your results. I’ve killed six mule deer, a hand full of hogs and an elk with hunting VLDs and Elite Hunters. All worked excellently. I’ve been a bit fearful of trying the target hybrids in game though, even though I’ve heard that folks do it. That’s why I’m asking though. If a hunting jacket thickness won’t handle the twist and velocity, but the target hybrids get plenty of good results, I’d consider going that route.

6 rem AI, 27.5” 1:8 PacNor.
115 VLD Hunting At 3200.
No Blow Ups. Bunch of deer between 150 and 483 yards. Most between 280 and 350 yards. Bullet always exits on heart lung shots.

So happy with it I have not tried anything else. My cousin runs the 105 in a 240 weatherby and they do not exit, more trauma.

Good luck, you are on the right track.

115 Berger’s tough to beat in that case. I have shot numerous deer and goats with them out to 800 yards with excellent results. Even got a exit on a cow elk lung shot at 150 yards . All instant death! 420 yard bang flop on goat exit hole !!

Forgot, Use a long action. Mine is on a short action Ruger. Overall length is longer than a 240 Weatherby so it ends up being a single shot.

Yeah a 700 S/A is almost too short for a .308. I’m probably going to use a Mauser, but do have a 700 L/A that’s could end up being used.

1-8” twist?

Get a Wyatt's extended mag box. They're like $30. Problem solved.

It is a total waste of a long action for this cartridge.

Good tip!

From what I can tell that Mag box is 3.100”. A SAMMI reamer from bolt face to the end of the throat on a 6mm Rem is 2.374, leaving .726” for the bullet. A 115gr VLD has a .750” nose. All the other Bergers will reach the lands. Even though the 115 VLD won’t reach the lands, it will fit.

If it’s actually that long, that’s pretty awesome. I may have to get some for small actions that I already have.

Just checked. With the 115 VLD Hunting overall length is 3.070”.
240 Weatherby in the Sierra Manual lists 3.062” as a Max.. I bought mine off the forum on this site. It was set up for 107 Match Kings. You could have yours throated differently and run a shorter oak.

No doubt you have other choices in a long action, based on my experience it is a single shot in a short action Ruger. If you can feed 3.06 or 3.07 from a box mag in a short action 700 that is awesome.

Do not disregard your Mauser. I have a 338-06 On a Mark X that is a hammer. All in the machine work, just takes time to make a stub and square up the face. Shilen Barrel probably does not hurt :).

It’s a SAMMI reamer that I picked up for a song and have been sitting on till I got a lope tag and a cheap barrel. With the SAMMI throat, the COAL you quote won’t hit the lands, but with a 3 degree lead, hitting the lands in a hunting rifle is probably not advisable. Barrel is a 30” Brux light palma chambered for a BRX with 2000 rounds down it. Cutting off the Remington threads and chambering for 6Rem should freshen it up nicely, and I’ll finish it somewhere between 26” and 28”. Now I just need to keep my eyes peeled for a cheap fiberglass stock...may end up just running wood.
