6mm ppc brass

I'm in the process of purchasing a Sako 6mm PPC USA single shot rifle which has a .271-.272 chamber. The rifle comes with some Sako brass but I know in the future I will need to make brass as there are no Sako 6mm PPC USA brass here in Canada that I can source. I know most PPC shooters get their brass by using the Laupa 220 R. Right now here there just isn't any to be had and may be like this for a while, but I am able to source 100 Laupa 6.5 Grendel brass and I read that the Grendel is basically a 6ppc necked upped to 6.5. Is there a downside to using this brass to form PPC-USA brass or am I better to wait and try and source the 220 Russian. TKS

Well it’s not just basically necked up
the Grendel shoulder is blown forward something like .070 there abouts
Would you see any problem in making 6 PPC brass out of it. If the shoulder is forward of the PPC then you would think that one could avoid having to jam a bullet in the rifling to fire form. Just size and fire to form.

That Sako brass will last a very long time. I’ve have a Sako sporter 6PPC repeater and have shot it a lot, great rifles. I’ve only used Sako brass in both it and its twin in 22 PPC, they aren’t max loads but they aren’t wimpy either. Some of the brass has over 20 firings on it.

As far has forming and using 6.5 Grendel brass I have no experience but I would assume there are good reasons people form using 220 russian Lapua brass. Half of these 6PPC guys are more mad scientist than reloader, hopefully they chime in.

According to Prophet River's website, 90% of 6PPC benchrest shooters use 220 Russian brass.--perhaps because it is Lapua. I've never used it with any of my 6PPCs, opting instead to use the already-formed Norma 6PPC brass, and I also use the Norma 22PPC brass in my 22PPC. Much less hassle, but probably not quite as good brass as Lapua, although I haven't experienced any problems with it, and it seems to take lots of firings.

Do it it works just fine

I have a Sako 75 6ppc and was in a similar situation. Be aware that Lapua 220 Russian brass has a smaller web diameter than a 6ppc "USA" chamber. It will work ok but you'll see it bulge after firing which isn't ideal. Sako or norma is correct for your factory chamber. Also there are different dies to match the brass / chamber so make sure your getting 6ppc "USA" .

I forgot to post that it would first be run through a 6 PPC sizing die setting the shoulder to the proper location.
I would do it this way:
Push back the shoulder .035 and use the expander ball.
Push back another .035 and use the expander ball.
Anneal.
Turn the neck, expanding the neck if needed to fit the turning mandrel. You’ll end up taking off more at the base of the neck where shoulder metal became neck.
Resize the neck and ensure shoulder bump is correct. Load and fireform.

If it’s anything like my recent experiment making 222 from 223, you’ll end up with a donut 2/3 the way down the neck. I haven’t messed with that further. With the PPC being a 30deg shoulder it may be tougher than my 222 trial.

I would buy the 220R brass. Check the neck thickness, you may need to turn a little if it’s the newest batch of Lapua 220R brass.

Has to be way more than 90%. Id bet its 99.5+%. I cant think of the last time i saw somebody using a case other than lapua
