6mm neck trimming

Panama Evans

PAYING IT FORWARD EXPECTING NOTHING IN RETURN
Hello everyone
I recently started shooting 6mm Norma in a savage 12f. I did as much research as I could within my limited abilities, and have learned about neck case turning. My question is, is this something I need to do. At this point I'm using lapua brass, and a Forster FL die honed to .002 neck tension.
A little more info. I recently built a DIY annealer, and am annealing every reload. I'm heating the brass to 700 deg.
I'm using 29gr of varget
Berger 105 hybrids
CCI 450's
I'm looking into the hornady lnl trimmer, but am on the fence if this is a direction I should go, how to varify if I need to do this. Any pros and cons to help me here would be wonderful

Panama: i have have had the same rifle as you, I assume it is the model 12 savage with 1:8 twist barrel.
loved this rifle, i was stupid and sold it.
for me, when I turned brass for thei rifle: i can honestly say that I did see much different in my groups.
You can always neck turn the brass, it will do no harm, if done well: it can only help you.
have fun with your savage
great starting rifle, darn accurate

Thanks for the reply
Yes same twist. I bought my sweetie and myself a matching pair. This will be our second season shooting them. So far my best group is 2.5" at 600yrds. Her's 3". I'm still working on load development, and fine tuning everything else. My next move are kreiger barrels, and ptg bolt heads.
So much to learn, and hours more of reading not to mention practice. Lol.

If you don't need to turn the neck to allow the cartridge to chamber and release the bullet when fired it is not desirable. Perhaps turning the neck just enough to give consistent neck wall thickness might improve accuracy. Chances are that turned necks will expand and contract in different places as they are used, eventually causing thick and thin spots around the diameter to reappear.

if you shooting 2.5 in groups at 600 yards, then you have a shooter in your hand. Those are great groups for factory gun, even good groups compared to customs rifles.
good shooting

I'll take that 2.5 barrel off your hands with the load data. :D:D:D

After more reading I do see slightly trimming the necks should help with accuracy. My goal is to work on acheaving increased accuracy. Yes more work, but if it helps I won't complain.

I found a killer deal on a new hornady unit, and by next week I should be neck deep in brass lol. Oh the joys of precision reloading

keep in mind if you turn the necks your .002 honed die may not give you .002 neck tension anymore. It will be less depending on how much you take off.

Thank you for the comment. I only intend to knock down any high spots to make the brass more uniform, taking off the smallest amounts possible.

My decision to neck turn or not is based on the chamber dimensions and measured neck thickness and variation. I've been running no turn neck chambers for about twenty years now, tighter than SAAMI spec but less than a tight neck (a true tight neck requires brass must be trimmed too suit the chamber).

Typically I measure my brass and set aside those cases with 0.001" or less variance (some lots of brass have been extraordinarily uniform so I bought a bunch from those lot numbers) get set aside as match brass, those less than .004" get neck turning for basic load development, and anything else is scrapped.

Running a SAAMI spec chamber in a factory rifle, checking neck wall uniformity will probably work as well as turning. You are correct in assuming the least amount of brass removal is best in such a chamber. Removing brass works the brass harder firing and resizing in a standard chamber, which is why annealing is useful to extend brass life.

And 2.5" at 600 is pretty good for a factory rifle, don't let that barrel go if it isn't shot out when you rebarrel. You might want to see what the Savage rifle team does in terms of loading too, as they are pretty successful with their factory rifles.

That's exactly what Terry wants. He is drooling over the 2.5" group size. I am waiting to see if you post when your sweetie outshoots you!:D

At this point were hoping to order new barrels in a couple months, but we all know it can take quite a while to get them. I will let you know once we have the new barrels how many rounds I've shot, and if your still interested we can talk.

You will need to let Terry know. I was commenting about what he said because I gathered that his comment went over the head. Besides, I don't have a Savage so the barrel would do me zero good. Then again if I had it, I probably still couldn't shoot a 2 1/2" group. :D:D:D

Please tell us your not heating the entire case to 700*
No I'm not hearing the entire case to 700 degrees. I may be relatively new to competition shooting on this level, but I do do my homework. I use tempilaq and now my cases look like they did when I got them from lapua. I just built the DIY annealer so I was getting a consistent annealing.

Lol she already has out shot me lol. I found myself devoting my energies and time to her having fun. See she is actually legally blind, and there is a possibility what vision she has go be gone one day. She has a rare disorder called bilateral optic nerve drusen, and there is no cure. She loves shooting as much as I do and seeing the look on her face when she wins a match is priceless.

Congratulations to you both. Sounds like a "match" made in heaven. My wife has eye issues and outshoots me also. Keeps a man humble!:)
