6mm for deer hunting & varminting

Guy's I need help making a decision on barrel contour for a rifle I am planning to have built.

I am looking for a contour for a Hart barrel that is not going to make the rifle too heavy. I am planning a 24" barrel in 6mm caliber.

I will be using a Brown Precision stock. I am trying to put together an all purpose gun for Texas deer hunting and varminting.

I had an F Class rifle built,my 1st custom rifle)and I got a few things wrong, too heavy contour on the barrel, wrong stock) I wanted an ultra accurate rifle and that's what I got but since I do not shoot competition this rifle just sits in the safe.

I would like to keep the overall weight on the gun down to about 8lbs, but do not want to have to sacrifice on the scope by having to put mini-type optics on this gun.

Any advice

The Remington Varmint contour should be about right for what your asking.
It's probably close to a #4 taper and should'nt be front end heavy at all.......
Have you thought about doing the Ackley thing to the 6mm ?????

Remington's varmint contour is reasonably light, and can be fluted to reduce the muzzle heavy feel. Factory guns with that barrel contour though are over 8 lbs, without optics.

I sure do like the 6mm Rem as a combination varmint, predator and deer cartridge!

I would recommend fluting the barrel unless all the shooting is from a bench or some sort of support. I like the feel of the Remington light varmint in 22-250.

Preacher, I actually thought about having this gun chambered in 6BRX. But since this gun is going to be a hunting rig the 243AI might be more convenient.

I know that i will be using the Nosler Partition for deer hunting. Probably will use a V-Max for coyotes. But will let the gun decide that one.

I bought one of the Nikon Monarch scopes in 4x16 on sale from Midway the other day, so now i have to build the rifle to put under it.

Thanks for the input on barrel contour.

The Remington Varmint contour is heavier than a 5.5 contour. For a sporter, you would probably choose a #3 or #4. The #3 is fairly close to a Remington sporter contour. If you use a Remington Varmint contour, you will have trouble making an 8# rifle with a 24 inch barrel. I am having a .243 Ackley built on a SA 700 and I will be using a Rock Creek #4 contour @ 25 inches. Good shooting....James Mock

I had the same dilemma about a year ago. I was batting around 6x284, 6.5x284, 6mmRem .243 Win 6mm AI and .243 AI. I finally decided on a 26in Remington varmint wt stainless fluted Krieger barrel with a 10in twist chambered in .243win. She is screwed to trued Remmy 700 short action and bedded into a Rem factory laminated stock. I just picked it up from the smith the other day. I topped it off with a Burris 4.5 x 14 fullfield II in Burris rings and mounts. Future plans are for a HS precision detachable magazine and pillar bedding. I have only gotten a chance to break in the barrel, per Kriegers website) with some cheapo Win factory loads that I had laying around but early results seem promising. I plan on shooting 85 grain partitions for deer and hogs at an expected velocity of around 3200-3300fps. I have RL19, H414,IMR4320,IMR5350 and Varget on hand that I plan on playing with. I wish Nosler made about an 85- 90gr accubond in 6mm. Good luck with your project.

Swampstander: Thanks for the post. I have almost decided that i am going to take a 308 case and size it to 6mm seat Partition with the base of the bullet just even with neck shoulder junction of the case and send the barrel and the case to On Target Technologies and they form the chamber for the rifle using EDM technology.

Some reviews on this process are available on their website.

I have an F class that i had built but do not shoot. It is a short action Remington that has been blue printed Jewell trigger, Mcmillan hunter benchrest stock, and Hart barrel in 22-250.

I had this Rifle built thinking i would use it as a varmint/deer rifle shooting Fed. Trophy Bonded Bearclaws when hunting deer. The rifle is amazingly accurate it will shoot 1's and 2's at 200 yds. But since i do not shoot competition the rifle is just too heavy and blocky to take to the field. I am going to have the barrel removed and have a 6mm barrel installed then i will remove that and send it off to OTT to have the chamber EDM'd. Then back in the receiver and install either an H&S or Brown precision stock.

What do you guys think? Any advice?

Is there a 6mm wildcat based on the .284 win case shortened to .243win or .308win length? I think that would be the cats ass.

The Remington Varmint is closer to a Lilja #7 according to Dan Lilja. For my carry around rifles that will get used for deer, I have #3 or fluted #4 barrel. My .243AI Stiller Predator actioned rifle with a Pac-Nor fluted #5 barrel and McMillan Sako Varminter stock and Leupold 4.5-14 x 40 scope weighs 9 lbs-4 oz.
