6mm Fat Rat data

I have the original RAT (skinny rat?) and I would like to know if any of you have tested IMR Power Pro 2000MR in your RATs.

i've shot Alliant MR2000 in my 6mmAR and it didn't show any gains over RE15 or H4895. I suppose pressure was lower but with a 26" barrel I didn't see any velocity gains because the port pressure climbed to where the brass was getting beat up even though primers looked fine. An adjustable gas port might help the situation since you could increase the charge to see an increase in velocity without killing the brass.

The accuracy seemed to be the same as RE15.

My rifle likes 29.1 of R15 - berger 105's, BR4 primer -- shoots ~.3 at 100 if i hold well -- shot a few .5MOA at 600 with it & good at 300 as well.

Some Chrono Data for H4895 with 105 HYB set to 2.288 OAL. Nothing shot particularly well at 200 yards. The 28.0 - 28.2 were the best (.5 moa at 200) others were ~.6MOA. Shot from (24" Krieger) brl.

How much jump is that, when you run your OAL at 2.288 with hybrids.

If I measured mine correctly, that would be almost .100 jump on my throat. Based on measurements of my chamber, I am going to have to jump all my bergers (87s, 95s, or 105s) anywhere from .030 to .100 to be at mag length.

For my game single loading isnt a huge deal, and my hornadys (105bthp, and 87vmax) look like they will work at mag length.

I will use the hornadys to fire form.

You are correct the jump is a lot ... right at .09x I would have to check my notes for exact measurement.

To be honest I don't need to jump them that far as i single feed the thing most of the time anyway, but I wanted to develop a load that mag fed first.

Hey Casey,

Did you only shoot two shot groups at 600. Are those 87s 105s or some of each. Judging by your thumb nail, those are crazy groups for 600. They look to be sub 1/4 min groups....is that correct?

Yes. Only two. I was playing around not expecting this.
105's. Yes. It is what it is. Good day shooting with a a good rig and round.

Wow! It's fun to have a great day like that.

I've got mine together and ready to shoot. Got 100 ready to charge and load. 50 with 4895 and 50 with CFE. I'll try 87 vmaxes and 105 bthp hornadys in each powder choice to start.

Well a little update: I have been fire forming and keeping records. I let a buddy of mine take it to the range and do a little work with three bullets powder/combos. This was the first firing on 50 of my newly fire formed brass.

I had fire formed with both H4895 and CFE223. Granted fire forming isn't suppose to be the place to figure out a load, but I wanted to keep good records anyway. Both powders shot pretty nicely while fire forming, but it was obvious that the CFE was pretty tolerant of different loads, plus I have lots, and it would be cool to make it work.

We started with 105 hybrids(jumped .030), Berger 108s(.010 in the land), and Hornady 105 bthp(jumped .020). All were HBN coated. None of these loads showed any pressure signs, so there may be a node above this one. We were only running about 2650ish to 2720ish on speeds. It was mid 50s and 5000+ ft elev, light breeze 3ish from right. Each group was shot with five rounds with no cleaning until all 50 were shot (5 foulers not shown) The best two were calipered at .4" the worst was a hair over 1". I'm excited to work it up a bit to see where it shows pressure. It will be interesting to see how stabile these loads stay in the heat of our summer matches.

Well some more update

Still a little cool here, but we got to shoot it at some steel from 330 out to 850. I was very happy with the way it performed. I'm running hybrids around 2825 with no pressure signs. It won't run with my 6SLR, but its going to be fun to try.

After waiting for a full year to see if Hornady is going to resume production of there cheap but accurate 87gr BTHP match bullets for my short line (200,300) load I have finally given up. Happened to come across some 87gr Hornady V-Max at the local gun shop. Took up a couple boxes and finally got around to loading them the other day. For a good fire Form load I use the 87gr BTHP and for practice as well as they are much cheaper than the the 87gr VLD's I take to big matches like the Nationals.
Brand new Alexander Arms Brass (Lapua) CCI450 primer, 28.5gr Varget, V Max loaded at Magazine length just exactly like my old BTHP load. Took it out on Friday to see how it went.
Shot it standing and unfortanatly they went right where I pointed the rifle.... Urhhhh. Sat down and shot a Clean with only 2X's then backed it up with a 7X Clean for a 200-9X. Pretty happy about that since I pretty much suck sitting. Went over the time limit by about a second on the second string however. Then took it back to the 300 yard line. Had exactly 53 rounds to shoot and fire form cases. Shot three sighting shots all in the 10 and X ring and then shot Rapid fire string after rapid fire string until all brass was used up. First string was a 100-9X clean followed up by a 6X clean for a 200-15X. I would say that's pretty good and the load seems to shoot "Just Fine" while fireforming brass. Ha!
The reason I put this out there as Im sure that other folks are in the same sitiation waiting on Hornady to re establish the 87gr BTHP bullet to there production line if the market eases up in the future. Fear not the V Max seems to shoot just as well if not better.
Shoot Well and have fun.

Very very nice Russ!

My Fatty has about 1200 round done range now and it has done me proud too, especially our last two steel matches.

I've found a sweet spot with hybrids right around 2870. Shot through our summer matches pretty consistently. My buddy is shooting his around 2770 with super crazy accuracy at mag length with 108s. They make us smile, especially when we shoot em in a bolt gun game and do well.
