6mm Dasher or 6-6.5x47 lapua ackley

6 Dasher or 6 x 47 Lapua Ackley ?

I have a 6mm bolt rifle slot without restriction approved by the police in England.

I plan to use it for varminting and shooting 300, 600 and longer if the chance arises.

I have had 6mmBR and 6 x 47 previously and would like something more special.

As a result I have a bunch of 6mmBR norma case and a bunch of 6.5 x 47 cases handy.

I have been offered a 308 bolt face BAT multishot action with 1 in 8 twist lilja striaght barrel .92 inch profile., Somebody cancelled his build) from stock.

I am considering either 6 Dasher or 6 x 47 lapua ackley

I know a dasher is proven with more loads about but the 6 x 47 lapua will feed better.

My question to all you is

Are there any other caliber in 6mm,that fits a 308 bolt face) that I should consider ?

I have no issues with relaoding, neck turning and necking up or down.

Thanks in advance

Between the 6mm Dasher and 6-6.5x47 the question really comes down to how much speed do you need.

The Dasher, with 105-108gr bullets, will max out around 3040 fps, maybe less) in most barrels.

The 6-6.5x47, with 105-108gr bullets, will get you to 3150 fps with many powders, and will top 3200 easily with Reloder 17.

The extra velocity makes the 6-6.5x47 much more flat-shooting than the Dasher, though I'd still give the Dasher a slight edge in accuracy, based on match reports. But remember that slight edge is mostly in vertical. The bigger cartridge will have less wind drift, which may be more important to a varminter.

The other cases to consider are: 6mm Remington, and Ackley Version), .243 Winchester, and Ackley version). Also, if you want to go full wildcat, there's a case called the BRK which is popular in california. It's the .243 Win with the shoulder pushed DOWN,for a longer neck). This will uses 6BR seating and neck-sizing dies.

Personally, I would let the typical distance and conditions where you shoot dictate my choice. If it's mostly inside 400 I'd probably opt for the Dasher--less powder, less recoil. If you normally take pretty long shots on larger animals, I'd go with a larger case.

I have a 243AI and a 6 dasher being built. I also have a 22BR and if the dsher is anything like the 22br it will become my favorite! The 243AI is pretty cool, but there is moderate recoil, and after a long string you will notice it. The 22BR is just simply sweet to shoot and Oh so accurate!!! Lee

Thank you for your advice.

Can I be very frank when I had a 6BR a few years ago, I was just getting into reloading. I was not even 50% as metiulous as I am now. Neck turning sorting cases, experimenting with seating depths so on and so forth,

It seems like for UK shooting distance it is really quite difficult to beat an EFFICIENT cartridge like BR such accuracy for such little powder.

OK

Last question

Is a 6 dasher is no more or less accurate than a 6BR. It just has slightly more powder capacity and can give up to 100 fps more than a standard BR ?

If so I am going back to a BR with 1 in 8 since my last BR was a second hand job with a 1 in 12

thanks

It's hard to beat the Dasher, as far as, accuracy and efficency. Barrel life is good, and the brass is cheaper. The draw back to the Dasher is fire forming, which I don't mind. All my fire forming loads are pretty accurate. In my opinion I like the Dasher. It's all in what you need out of your rifle. :D

My personal experience with the two 6-6.5X47 I've built, is that while you can make them go very fast, they lose accuracy. Mine top out at about 3000 with 105's and 2950 with 115's but both are extremely accurate.

The dasher is easier to find dies for, it has a distinguished track record for superlative accuracy and it will allow you to break 3000 with 105's

Do not discount the 6XC. A very accurate cartridge, brass is either available ready-to-shoot or can be made from 22-250.

For sheer velocity, the 243 or the 243 AI are also available with excellent components.
