6mm Dasher - How would you build it?

Leaddog

F-Class T/R
Thinking of having a 6 Dasher built for Benchrest light gun and perhaps F Open for 600 yards.

If cost was not a consideration, how would you build the ultimate 6 Dasher shooting Berger 105 or 108's?

Action?
Barrel manufacturer and twist and length?
Reamer choice and specs. No turn or turn?
What stock choices?

What gunsmith is considered the go-to Dasher guy?

Thanks for your input.

Charlie, I would use a RB/LP/RE BAT 7.5 " action with an 8 twist Bartlein or Krieger barrel. Other choices would be Spencer, Hart Or Shilen if you prefer button-rifled barrels. I shoot Berger 105 VLD's or Berger 108 BT Match bullets pushed by Reloder 15 powder. As far as gunsmith's, there are several who will do excellent work. Billy Stevens does mine, but I would be comfortable with Clay Spencer, Mike Bryant, Dwight Scott, Sid Goodling, or Dave Tooley. There are many others, but I know these men can do an excellent job. James Mock PS I would think a barrel in the 28" length would be ideal.

Charlie, I would use a Bat, Panda, Bordan or any Good action. Barrel a Brux 7.83 - 1 twist so you can use any bullet up to 115's and i do like the low rider stock. The reamer is the deal get your own don't mess with what some one else has. if you need more info. go to my low rider dasher on the 6 BR improved section or PM me........jim

get a PTG or JGS set up for the berger hybrids (105) and have the shank above the neck shoulder junction. i am having really good luck with my benchmark 3C barrel in 11 twist .300 wsm. get one in .236 with an 8" twist 3C and it should treat the bullets very delicately

I just went through deciding on components for my 6Dasher. I went with a defiance medium, left hand, right port, drop port action. Shehane MBR tracker stock and got a Brux 1:7.75 HV contour barrel off this site. I ordered 1-25-12 and got my action and stock about 1 to 2 weeks ago. Talk about fast.

My new 6BRDX has a Viper Drop Port, Brux 1:8", 0.236 land, 30" barrel, and a Precision Rifle & Tool BR stock, with a custom modified shape we hope to market after its evaluated. Still waiting for the finish work. The Freebore is about 0.125, set up for Berger Hybrids. Jewell trigger ... but I wouldn't mind trying a Kelbly trigger.

The difference in a 6mm Dasher (40 degree) and 6mmBRX(28 degree) is the shoulder angle. I would do a 6mmBRX instead of the Dasher because you want have to have dies made. You can use a 6mmBR die(backed out .098") in conjuntion with a body die. Or buy a 6mmBRX die from Robert Whitley from this forum. I would build it on a Panda F-Class action. I would use a 32.25", Rockcreek, 1:8, Heavy Palma, 5R barrel. The chamber would be either a .272 or .271 no neck turn chamber with .120" freebore. I would put it in either a McMillian F- Class Stock or a Long Range Prone stock. I would Use the Kelbly Rings and Trigger. I would top it off with a 12 x 42 Nightforce or a 10 x 50 x 60 Sightron scope. I would use Lapua Brass, fire formed with 30.5 grains of Varget with b105 Bergers or 107 Sierras. My fireformed loads would be accurate enough to shoot 600 yard matches. After fire forming I would trim, anneal, and reload with 32. (+/- .2 to .6) finding a load shooting 3020-3080 fps. in an accuracy node.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Kelbly Triggers? i use 3 of them, Reamer, if you plan to use the 105H go with a .136 free bore and a case length of 1.560, neck is up to you a no turn would be .269 with a slight clean up of the neck, Blue box brass is running about .012 so .024 + .2433 = .2673 just perfect to clean the neck up. Neck tension is everything so to get it more uniform go for a slight turn if your plan to shoot BR.1 K. Barrel length is no big deal, i used from 26.5 to 30" long barrels don't gain much over a 28"and add a brake. I do like the low rider stock and it tracks good and it shoots well but there is a price, they are a PITA. when you clean, don't bump them, you have to use stock tape. I use Kelblys 1M they track good and they are a tank, nothing hurts them. Barrels, i use Kreiger, Bartlein and Brux, i have three of them and i will get more, the two brux shoot in the one's and last one shoots in the zero's they clean easy and they are smooth. get a HV.@28 with a 7.83 - 1 Twist and you can shoot anything. and the .136 free bore is the min. for the 115 DTAC. but it's perfect for the 105H....jim

Bat- RB-LP-RE

Krieger or Bartlein, .236" groove, 28" is plenty.

6 Dasher reamer with .269" neck and .104" freebore.

ST-1000 McMillan fiberglass.

alf, don't you think you would need a little more free bore with the 105H due to it's length? it's almost as long as a DTAC 115. I'm shooting it in a .155 fb. and the heel of the boat tail is about .050 above the shoulder.....jim

Jim,

I have not tried any Hybrids yet, so I don't have any to compare. The OP just asked on 105's, but didn't specify which or what ones to consider.

Since I have a few thousand 105 VLD's that seem to work, I'll stick with the .104" for now. That gives plenty of room for powder, stays out of the dreaded donut area, and leaves the whole neck to chase the lands.

On my Dashers the 105 Hybrid base is about flush with the case/shoulder junction and the boattail/bearing surface is half way up the neck. This is with a PT&G .104fb reamer and a 1.565" chamber length.

I'd also suggest a longer FB. I have 2 Dashers and one is roughly(throat done in separate operation) .125 and the other is a .136. Both Dashers shoot the new hybrids exceptionally well.

Radar, I can't understand how that can be did you ever check your reamer on a comparator? The heel is only .050 above the shoulder neck area and i'm in to the lands about .006. A friend is on zero and he is very close to the shoulder neck area with a .136 free bore.Do you have a lot of rds. out of the barrel? both of these reamers have the boat tail down in the case.......jim

I'm also shooting a Dasher; trued n blued R700, 30" straight Bartlein .236 1/8, Shehane ST1000, Jewell and PT&Gs reamer .2705" neck, .104"FB.
Hybrids .010" in at 3,050. Magic.

No I haven't Jim....I've had the feeling for awhile that it may actually be longer than what the print shows it is suppose to be,but any reamer/chamber geared toward the 105VLD should be good with the Hybrid. The Brux barrel has less than 200 rounds on it. I could use more freebore with the Berger 108's but I wouldn't have alot of neck left for the 105VLD/Hybrid then.

Just like my last DASHER:
Defiance Action RB/LP/bottom eject w/spiral fluted bolt and Picatinny rail
BRUX 29" SS barrel w/interrupted fluting
Chamber specs .460 shldr, .471 base, 269 nk, 103FB 1.555 length
Jewell HVBR-A trigger set at 2oz
Precision Rifle and Tool 'Low Boy' stock
Kelbly 34mm scope rings
March 8-80x56mm scope w/MTR1 illuminated reticle.

And, an awesome paintjob by http://www.madshadowcustompaint.com/ so if you don't shoot worth a crap you can at least look good doing it....
