6mm Creedmoor short throat? Help...

I just built a 6 creed with a 0.109 freebore and tight neck chamber pre-fit, knowing that I would be limited to reloads and top end bullet weight of ~105gn. This is my first experience with the 6CM too.

So far I'm really struggling with the load development, 87Vmax, 87BTHP and 95VLD's all shoot terrible. The 75Vmax's shoot pretty well though which leads me to believe that the freebore is way too short. I've also done a lot of reading on this topic and i think I'm getting more confused then when I started...haha

All of my 6mm rifles love H4350 so that is what I'm using along with Peterson brass.

Does anyone run this tight of a freebore and had any luck with 85-105gn pills? Any feedback is much appreciated.

I have a 6mm Creedmoor with the same 0.109" freebore. I'm shooting the 80-grain #1515 Biltz bullet with 38.5grn of IMR 8208XBR. It is the accuracy load in the Sierra 6th Edition manual page 328.
The same Sierra Manual is showing Reloader 16 powder as their "Accuracy Loads" for the 90-grain and 100-grain bullets.

Howdy !

What twist rate does your barrel feature ?

Is your Peterson brass Srp or Lrp? My Peterson brass had a fair amount less capacity. Book loads didn't work in mine using it. Still shot well, just took about 1.5-2 grains less in my rifle to hit pressure.

It is LRP, I'm not getting great ES's with it either 20's and 30's.

Are the bases of your bullets below the neck/shoulder junction? The 87's and 75 gr Hornady's are what I use in chambers that are getting worn throats. The shape of those bullets take up freebore. VLD's I usually seat into the lands to start out, and move out if needed.

My 24", Heavy "Sporter" Criterion barrel in 6 XC has, a .109 Free Bore and a 1-7.5 Twist,..
And shoot's, the 80's ( both Sierra BTSP' Varmints and 80 gr. Berger FB ) 95 grain, Classic Hunters and the 108 Elite Hunters into, ragged ONE Hole, groups ( .2's and 3's ) and maybe, a 1/2 MOA on,.. a "bad" Day.
Using, a 6X- 20X scope and Timneys BEST, Trigger set at, 1 Pound, H S Precision Stock, Pillared & Glassed W/ Free Floated bbl. 1.5 Inches past, the Recoil Lug, 9.5 Pounds, total weight.
"Jumping" each of, those Bullets from, .025 Min. to .050 to .060 Max. and using IMR 4350 and StaBall for Powders.
But, I couldn't get the 87 Horn V-maxes to group better than, 5/8 to 3 /4 MOA, either, so set them aside for use, in my .243 Win Tikka ( 1-10 Twist ) and,. Coyote huntin ! Many others, have had problems with, "Consistency" !!!
NOTE ; Accuracy came "on" PAST,.. .020 "Jump" for me with, ALL 4 of, the other Bullets, as they ARE, of, Hybrid or, Tangent Ogive, design !
You might wanr to "Polish" your, "lead angle / Throat" area with some, JB's as a "Slick" Throat, doesn't "hold" as much Copper and Carbon ( IMO ). Good Luck And,.. Try some, Sierra's and Bergers !

I've got a new set of Berger 95VLDs ready to go I found a bit of a node at 3150fps, going to try then out tomorrow. 40-40.6gn of H4350. Thinking this cartridge should be higher velocities than that but I'll try anything at this point.

I have some Hornady 105s and some Sierra 107s to try also.

Try seating a few different bullets. 010 into the lands and you may be shocked how well your rifle suddenly shoots! Been there, done that, many times! Good luck.

@ PA Wild,..
I use, ONLY Sierra's, Classic Hunters and Elite Hunters ALL with, Hybrid or, Tangent Ogive Design's as, much easier to,.. "Tune" at, .025 to .060,.. "off" the Lands ! My 95 gr. Classic's are going 3,075 FPS ( NOT at, Max Velocity ) but, VERY accurate !
True high BC VLD's, need more, "Work" as they are, very critical, ( being Secant Ogive design ) on seating distances and I personally, wouldn't MIX them ! You also, might want to "back off" on, the Powder charge !
Animals, can't tell the difference in, 50-75 FPS when,.. Hit

I agree but the rifle has a nice node there. I just got back from the range to verify the Berger 95 VLD velocity data 40.2, 40.4 and 40.6 gains of H4350 are all the same 3150fps. So I've got a good node, now just to get the load tuned with seating depth. Hopefully I can find a seat node...

Ruger built a bunch of 6mm creedmoor precision rifles (gen 2) such that the throat length was much shorter than SAAMI spec. Using factory Hornady rounds, the 108s were jammed into the lands. Max SAAMI spec length rounds using berger 105 hybrids were also jammed into the lands. But they shot well, so I didn't worry about it.

My 2nd 6 creed has a .104"FB, 274nk, started running 105 Hybrids and both Berger VLDs, never had any issues with those bullets and I did try some 87HPBTs, too.
