6mm Creedmoor powders

Higher pressure/velocity and groups went from the .3s to .5s
Just spoke with Alliance Powders. I explained everything that I'm experiencing and testing. He agreed but doesn't have a lot of data on the 6mm Creedmoor. Mostly 6.5 with is not the same. The weight of the bullet on the 6 5 is heavier and just bigger in dia so the burn rate is different. As we spoke I'm going to try increasing the burn rate of the RL23, in the case itself by running maybe tighter next tension, going to a 115 grn bullet and running the bullet closer to the lands or into the lands. Currently I think that what's going on is that it's not burning in the case, but rather throwing the powder into the barrel and igniting there causing more heat in the barrel itself.

H4350 powder
Been there done that. Great extreme spreads at higher load volumes, but barrel burner for sure. With the 6mm Creedmoor case, the neck is shorter than let's say a br, bra, or dasher. That is putting very hot gasses like plasma directly on the throat.

You could try a hotter primer.
I love RL23, it runs great in my 7wsm...almost the same proportion as 6cm.

I'm using lapua brass, and cci 450 a mag primer. I might have to go up to a large primer. Hate to get away from the lapua brass but it might be necessary.

Ok guys, after a great deal of investigation here's where I stand. The RL23 seems to be to low in burn rate. The goal was to fill the case capacity to 100% with a burn rate that works for my 6mm Creedmoor. Here's what I have found and where I'm going with this at this point. Here's why I think that it's to slow. As I'm shooting the original problems where with fire cracking in the throat with H4350. I was only getting about 400 accurate rounds of barrel life. Moving forward I wanted to accomplish two things, 1) slower burning rate, bulkier powder that would fill the case for more efficient Extreme spread. 2) thought that the slower burn rate might also help with throat erosion and barrel life.
What it appears is happening is that it truly worked for Extreme spread, but it appears that its throwing unburned powder into the bore where it ignites. This is causing, excessive barrel heat, fire cracking spread out lightly over a larger area of the first few inches instead of extreme heat right on the lands. I like where this is going and what I've been finding however I now want to increase the burn rate in the case possibly taking away the extra heat generated in the barrel. Looking for a happy medium so to speak. The interesting thing when I look at the velocities, it's very good, high in fact. I spoke with the powder mfg, looking at this problem and spoke about RL26 which is an even slower burning powder. (This might explain the fps increase on the Rl26) the slower burning powder is burning slow enough that it's not clean also. The heat generated is farther down the barrel, so lots of carbon build up in the first few inches.
My focus is to stay the current coarse however speed up the burn rate. So here's my thoughts.
1) more seating pressure. .003 press instead of .002
2) start moving the bullet into the lands
3) possibly open the flash hole, any thoughts?
4) seat the CCI 450 primer farther forward towards the flash hole. This will be like adding spark advance and change the timing

I dont know if you can tell or not but I'm really focused on details. Please include as much of this as possible when responding. General thoughts are also welcome because it might spark an idea, but for those re poll respondents with data, please include it. I have zero clue when I'm told that a particular Circumstance shoots really well. I'm not sure what really well is indicating. That could be a 1.5 moa group at 100 yards. Lol

Dont modify your flash hole and you cant change where you seat your primers. They need to have the slight crush on the bottom no matter what load you have. Youre messing with powders that are waaaay too slow for what youre shooting. Rl26 is a big magnum powder. You need to be down in the 4831/4350/h1000/rl16/varget range. Copy the 243 powders- think of case capacity. And when you talk about firecracking is it hurting your mind from a borescope? You should be getting 1000+ rds from a good barrel.

I'm testing RL23, not 26. As for the barrel life, trust me they where hurt. I will concede that I've moved into unconventional areas , but not Without purpose. With what I do for a living, it's how I've become successful. It's just what I do.

I like hearing from you as you lay out the truth to the best of your ability. Experience shows, and the cream will always rise to the top. It might take a lot of failures, but I dont consider that a bad thing.

Even rl23 is too slow in my opinion. I use rl19 for 280 size cases. Getting too slow to save on barrel life may be hurting you even more. Try some rl16-17 and i know youll like it more.

I've tested them. I'm Looking for something very specific out of the testing that I'm doing. You'd mention not to open up the Flash hole do you mind me asking what that would do if I did? I see that Starlinecoffers SRP with a large rifle flagpole.

It just hurts the accuracy. Like their 6.5grendel brass with the srp and .080 flash hole is useless in benchrest when compared to the small flash hole lapua has. Starline makes excellent brass but they lose probably 90%+ of their potential grendel customers just for that. With cases and rifles that you can actually see small changes just that little sinclair reamer that opens them up a couple thou will show on paper. Of course all the testing youre doing is half the fun right?
