6mm Competition Match Update

6CM Winter Update:

The 6CM had a great 2nd year!

After shooting my first 6CM barrel to well over 4,000 rounds. I chambered a 2nd barrel and during the 2nd season with the 6CM I switched barrel manufactures from Kreiger to Bartlein, based on the recommendations of my partner, and his experiences) and the availability of barrels we had in stock. However, the quality of the barrel and the results from the 6CM didn’t change.

The, current, barrel has over 3000 rounds through it currently, and the last match fired with it yielded two national records, both are 200 yard reduced course records) 995-52X for a 1000 point XTC match and 200-17X for slow fire prone. Before that the 6CM was able to post scores at Perry where shooters claimed the 6th place, 16th place and 137th place in the overall championship. These were the only 3, to my knowledge; 6CM’s being shot in competition.

The 6CM is currently much more popular in F-Class, Tactical and “fun” matches than it is in NRA XTC competition. That is mostly because NRA XTC match rifle shooters are shooting cartridges from the AR-15 Platform.

The statistics I can prove for the 6CM are:

o Velocity over 3100 fps with the 107 and 115,my best accuracy from the 115 is about 3075 fps, but we can get over 3200 fps)

o Accuracy: under ½ MOA and most if not all rifles are under ¼ MOA.And that is with the short throat length, meaning the 115 or 107 bullet is seated beyond the neck/shoulder junction).

o Most importantly, barrel life of 4,000 rounds or more from all barrels to date.

The best comment I hear, over and over, from my customers is that the fire-forming load shoots as good or better than they had hoped the 6CM would shoot after fire formed. After fire forming it shoots even better, with more velocity).

Given the success of the 6CM the next step is the 6.5CM. We have already chambered one barrel in the 6.5CM, but have yet to shoot it. We expect great results, the same as we have gotten with the 6CM.

While the information is proprietary, it is not secrete.

Furthermore, I welcome any comments on the 6CM.

Congrats Joe on those National Records. I am more than pleased with the way my 6CM shoots. I wish I could shot it to its potential. Donnie an I shot at Manatee last weekend and even tho there was no match I hit that 8" steel plate almost every other shot at 1000 yards even in the 10-20 mph wind. I chronoed my loads last October and I was getting over 3200 fps with the 115s. I love mine and there are more people asking " hey what is that?" Keep us informed on the 6.5CM. Thanks again for the 6CM Shoot Strait teele1

Yes Joe,these rifles are out-standing.They run with the magnums at a very low cost.Teele1 and I have less in our whole rig then most others have in their scopes.Teele1 and I shoot all the time together. He shot thirty shots and hit the 8inch gong 15 times. My self I got off to a late start, was helping my brother break-in a new Savage.Once I got dialed in and started Reading the wind things went very well.We had a great weekend of shooting in heavy winds .Thanks again for such a great caliber. It truly has alot of heads turning and a lot of questions being asked. Also this was at 1 thousand yards.

Latest 6CM Update
A 6CM on a Savage action has just won the March 2008 1000 Yard Steel Plate Shoot at Manatee Gun Range in Myakka City, Florida by none other than Don Dunlap. Congratulations Donnie for that great shooting with your 6CM beating those 6.5-284s and all those Short Ultra Magnums.

As the late Elvis Presley would say thank you, thank you very much. It's nothing but a thing when your shooting a 6CM.There was everything from a 6ppc to a .338 Lapua, great caliber Joe thanks again.

Craig sorry I just seen your post.David Bruno chambered a kreiger barrel, threaded it and put it on my Savage action. It has a sss barrel lug, been bedded in a Bell&Carlson Medalist stock, factory accutrigger set at 1.75 lbs.Shooting 115 d-tac's at 3058 fps.win.brass.David also made the die, excellent gunsmith I might add.It had a weaver 24 straight power on it at the time I shot that shoot, now it has a 12-42 benchrest nightforce on it.Ken Ferrel 20 minute angle base and ior rings.Teele1 and I built these rifles at the sametime. Both of them shoot great. Some people out there in computerland say there's alot of drama in this caliber, and that might be.One thing is for sure it holds it's own and then some.Since that shoot Teele1 and I have shot our first 600 yard f-class shoot,I took first Teele1 took second. He should have beat me and I expect the next time he will.

Donnie,

How do I get to Manatee Gun Range driving from the Ft. Lauderdale area ?

I have a couple of 6CMs I want to test at 1000 yds.

Can we shoot prone at this range ?

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Andy,
Excuse me for jumping in on Donnie, he sometimes is so busy working that computer time is a premium. Get to Okeechobee City and go west on State Road 70 past US27 thru Arcadia and go to Myakka City. Turn right on Myakka Wauchula Road,Flashing light at intersection). Take that winding road until it ends at SR-64e. Turn left and travel to Logue Rd and turn right at the big white sign reading Manatee Gun and Archery Club. The range is down the road about a mile on the left. The club is open Thursday thru Sunday. 1805 Logue Road Myakka City, FL 34251 Phone: 941-322-0055
hope this helps

Teele, Donnie, thanks for the excellent directions, figure it'll be about a 3hr drive or less.

I received my first 6CM 2 years ago, and haven't had mutch time to shoot it. First and only time at 600 yds it posted a 598-32X, prone, sling, irons. Oh, and that was while fireforming.

Now that I am planning on going back to it, I've noticed that the F/L die only sizes half of the cartridge neck. Worst of all, the seating die seems to touch the mouth of the brass causing the newly sized shoulder to bump up in a rounded contour, strange.

Are you using the same Redding dies supplied by Joe, have experienced anything similar ?

Thanks,

Andy

Andy,
I have a Newlon custom cut die from Joe. I have it adjusted to size just about 1/4 of the neck. I also use Lee's Dead Length Seating die and it seems to work just fine. Shoot Strait teele1
