.25 MOA is extremely difficult to do at 400 yards. That's an inch you know. Extrapolate that out to 1,000 yards and you are in winning, record benchrest company.

Calibers that can do that are often based on the 6 BR case, a 308 case or maybe a 300 Win Mag. Rifles are usually super heavy and not suitable for hunting.
They are specialty rifles that cost multiple thousands and are most always pieced from precision components. Then you have to have a shooter that is well-schooled in the skill required to shoot sub-moa groups at those ranges.

Count most of the shooters in the land OUT for being able to do this. I really think your goals are exemplary but if you had to ask, not within the helm of your experience. Learn to shoot say a quality 6 BR using 102-108 gr. bullets and see what you can do.

Like most all education, you will soon learn how much you don't know. Then you can start and take it from there.

There was an article in the American Hunter recently by George Harris entitled "How Far Should You Shoot." The essences of it was determine you maximum effective distance by shooting in field positions (as you would hunt) to see at what max distance you can consistently hit the vitals. He suggested five consecutive hits as the criteria.

On a ghog crawler there is probably about a 4" hortizontial area and maybe a 2 1/2" vertical vital area. For a standers, reverse the numbers. Just something to think about.

I am just trying to see what is out there .I shoot a 22 br and am looking at a 6mm br improved in a hv barrel on my shilen dga.there are several places in my area to shoot to 1000 yards.i play around with my br out to 300 yards now .

I use the 87 gr. Hornady in my mid range and the 105 gr. Hornady for long range. Both Ruger #1s in 6mm Remington.

Are the barrels for those two guns twisted differently. Inquiring minds need to know.....

Thanks.

If your going to shoot long distance you need a range finder that probably cost $2000.

I would shoot a 243AI and something in the 105 - 115gr range. You know the heavy stuff for that caliber.

If you set up for those heavy bullets you can still shoot the lighter bullets from it if the mood strikes you.

All of my AR-15 uppers for PD are setup to shoot 77gr ammo but I almost always shoot 50gr bullets. So I opt for a 1:8 twist.

Groundhogs or prairie dogs at 1k the 105 A-max or the 108 eld will both work well. Say away from the 105 Bergers they will pencil them and they crawl back in their holes. Even at 6-700 bergers will pencil.

6mm Dasher, 6x47, 243AI 6mm Creedmoor would all be good choices with a 1-8 or1-7.5T barrel.

My vote would be for 87's or 105's. Get an 8 twist with a .104 free bore. That way you can shoot the 87gr. Vmax or the 105's.

As for a caliber,I prefer the 6Dasher. Capable of shooting BR or varmints and good barrel life. Best of both worlds.

given the dasher or a 6 mm br ackly and a 26 inch barrel what are the velocities would you get at the muzzle using 80 to 105 grain bullets?
gary.

With my dasher & 105 I'm getting 2901fps (4 shot avg) and they are devastating on ground hogs
