6mm bullet comparison

Has someone compared 117DTAC vs 117DTAC boron nitride coated for velocity, pressure with same powder charge or any kind of comparison?

Lynn,

Thanks for the update. The info I got was fresh off the grapevine so I was not sure of the details. Can't say that I am surprised.

Eric

With 6mm's:

115 gr bullets are right on the edge of what's workable in a 6mm bore size - even have to be careful with 115's - need to make sure critical items are in balance for consistency and accuracy,i.e. twist rate just right, maybe need to run moly to control possible blow ups, etc.).

over 115 gr = don't waste your time - too big and heavy and not realistically workable in a 6mm bore size, over the edge).

Just my opinions on the matter.

Now, if we could just get Eric to tweak the Berger 115VLD so they didnt go POOF!, I would be one happy fellow! I am having to look at going back to 107s  or revert back to a 105VLD load that has never failed. When you lose one round getting to the target and drop more points than you drop in the rest of a match, thats bad ju-ju!

And, like Robert said, you gotta balance some items...I did, and I still had some turn into dust! I have never lost a 115DTAC though.....thicker jacket, I suspect.

John,

After considerable research on this situation we have determined that a thicker jacket does eliminate,or significantly reduce) bullet failures. The thicker jacket does not make the bullet tougher or stronger but does make it less likely to result in a melted core, which is the primary cause of bullet failures).

To that end, all of our bullet that are used in long range target shooting, including the 115 gr VLD) are being made with a thicker jacket. The label on a box of bullets made with thicker jackets will say either THICK or TARGET. Bullets made on standard thickness jackets are now labeled HUNTING because the standard thickness jacket works well on game and hunters who shoot one or a few shots are unlikely to experience failures due to excessive heat realized by the bullet.

Eric

Schweet! Now I can go back to running 115s at 600 out of the 6XC,which was my favorite bullet/load) instead of the 105/108s,still great, but just not the 115s).

Oh, and for anyone that doesnt know, the thin jacketed stuff on deer is UNREAL deadly. 6 deer with Bergers so far since last year and not one has take a SINGLE step after being hit. I have done that occasionally with other bullets but NEVER every single time!

So far, I have tested the 6mm 90BT and the 30cal 185VLD. One warning though, try not to hit them in the big meaty parts, as you may end up losing a bunch of meat. These things are like grenades when they hit. But if you dont want your deer running off to get lost in the thick swamp, the back of my property), the Bergers are the ticket. Look for some Gamekings to be up for sale in the For Sale section soon. :)
