6mm BRM

Questions: I'm new to reloading and I have an interest in the 6mm BRM from E. Arthur Brown. I have the info they show on their site. Is there more reloading info available? Is anyone shooting it? What are the pros and cons of the cartridge? I would appreciate answers or guidance for more information. Lynn

Lynn,

I shoot a 6BR at 100 yards for benchrest (VFS). It's a tack driver, but it's a custom action/barrel/stock/trigger. The 6BRM appears to be made from the 30-30 case as far as I could see. I used to shoot a 7mm Waters in handgun silhouette decades ago and it was a great little gun (T/C contender, 14 inch barrel). I don't know what you intend to do with this rifle, but why not just go with the 6BR? I shoot 68 grain BTs and get about 3300 fps.

You'll likely get better replies if you provide more information to help us.

Lynn, seems kind of old school type of cartridge..Many benchrest cartridges of yesteryear were formed from the 30-30, 30WCF..I guess it depends on the rifle action you are building on..Can you tell us what you want this for ?? Bench, single shot hunting rifle..On this site, most custom builds start with Lapua brand brass..Is that any help?? Mike in Ct

I have a TC G2 in 17HMR. I wanted a 243 Win. or similar barrel for deer hunting and long range steel fun shooting. The 243 is not available in the G2 frame. [pressure] The Eabco accuracy barrel in 6mm BRM seemed to be a good choice for my needs. The E. Arthur Brown web site has limited reloading information for the cartridge, and I can't find information. I realize the 6mm BRM is a wildcat, but there should be more info somewhere. For ex. 100/105 bullet gr. reloading info and ballistics. Lynn

Lynn, seems well thought out enough...Wait for a few more replies..If you want it, it is not that difficult to load for with the right dies & components..good luck, mike

Lynn,

When I shot IHMSA back in the 80's I used a T/C contender in 6mm TCU and the 7mm Waters. Both were excellent out to 200 meters. The 7 Waters was a 154 grain FB Hornady at about 2200 fps in the 14 inch barrel; the 6 TCU was a 162 BT Hornady at about 1700 fps out of the 10 inch barrel. I called the 7 Waters "Reach out and touch" because if I got it on the steel, the target went down, including the rams at 200 meters. IIRC, both loads used WW748, but no idea what the charges were. If you can find one, the old IHMSA reloading guide has a lot of good info for these rounds. HTH

Lynn,

Delta gave you something to think about with the 6BR suggestion. Lots of info on it, lots of reloading equipment, there's many on here who can help you with the project. Whatever you do, best of luck!

BRM = VERY WEAK CASE! = NOT CHEAP!

6 BR, 6x47 Remington, 6 Dasher, 6 BRX, 6 XC, 6 x47 Lapua = You are good to go with either of these

Sorry for the misleading 1st post. I purchased a 6mm BRM cal. barrel for my TC G2 for hunting and fun shooting, not competition. I'm looking for reloading data. Is anyone shooting a 6mm BRM?

I believe that Eabco will give you some good hunting data, and I suggest Montana Extreme copper killer and Montana copper cream for cleaning the barrel.

Good luck

Any comments? Anyone?
I shoot an EAB model 97d in 6mm BRM I have developed several loads and learned much about the rifle. A few things I have learned are first it can be very accurate shooting well under .5 moa. Second it seems to prefer heavy bullets and a powder burn rate that I previously would have considered too slow for the case volume. Third is that the design weak point is the lack of any camming action on chambering cartridges as well as case extraction. I feel that this design flaw limits top velocity to the design flaw and not to the cartridge. I feel that in a different action that has some camming to extraction such as the TC Encore the top end velocity will see as much as 200 fps velocity. That said the 97D chambered in the 6mm BRM is still respectable in velocity slightly beating out the smaller cased 6x45 so very usable just not all it could be. Also I must say that I do very much like the 97D rifle and its chambering in 6mm BRM. To date I have taken one coyote at a range of about 300 yards loaded with a 100gn sbt bullet to a velocity of 2500 fps which is about max in my rifle for positive extraction of fired cases. The load uses 36gn of Reloader #25 and is superbly accurate in my rifle.
I know that the maker is not very helpful with load data but it can not be denied that he has an excellent product. The fact that he offers little by way of tested load data is to me immaterial because I always prefer to develop my own loads and the little bit he gives is enough to get a feel for where to start looking as to powder burn rate and bullet weights for the 1/8" twist.

Dang boys no need to get pissy, guess it is Monday. Saw the gent just joined today. Most don’t notice dates on threads.
I read through the thread and saw that his question was never answered directly only similarly. Since I seem to be a rare commodity having experience to answer the question directly I saw no harm in doing so regardless of the date of the thread which actually I didn't notice until it was pointed out. Still I see no harm done because data for the cartridge is almost nonexistent and what little is available from EAB Co. is even older than this thread. I imagine someone else in the future will ask the same question about the 6mm BRM and this may be the only source with a positive answer. I have and use load data that was published starting in the 30's and some from each decade prior and I consider none of it useless. So if anyone asks I will share what data I have developed for the cartridge even if it is five years from now, Lord willing !

The BRM cartridges never had a strong following. I had a 7BRM and it was about like the 30-06 AI, compare them to the 7-30 and the standard 30-06, they had a small window of return and then with a heavier bullet than I preferred.
The US cartridges, more of a smaller Herrett length case were a bit better than the FL 30-30. The BF pistol would stand a bit more pressure than the TC platform, but not much. IHMSA was the game and most folks chasing an equal of 7BR. This was right about the time the heavy 6mm bullets got popular and available.

I also have a fairly large library of load books and data, ranging from the 30’s to present. I use it for reference only and there is some very questionable loads by today’s standards. The old thought of stiff bolt lift being a high pressure sign is true, but usually way over what the guess was 40-50 years ago with the use of modern equipment.

Typewriter shooter, lol never heard that as a reference before.
