6mm BR

Hello all, I am new to the Forum. The reason for the post is; I just had my 6mm Norma BR Blue Printed. I have a box of Lapua 90gr OTM Scellar ammo. My problem my gunsmith set my chamber so close the ammo is too long. I do not want to set the bullet lower because it will increase the pressure. I took the bullets apart. My question is does anyone know what powder Lapua used so that I can reuse it. All other parts are fine. Vince

Rather than mess with the ammo, I would have the smith lengthen the throat to fit the ammo, that way you will not have the same issue in the future.

It's not likely that a large consumer of powder like Lapua is, will be using a powder that the everyday consumer can purchase. It's a part of their secret recipe I'm sure.

Think real hard before you decide to lengthen the throat. You can always go longer but you can't go shorter.
Pull one of the bullets, lay it next to a loaded round. Compare it's seated depth to the loaded round.
Might be room to go deeper in the case neck and not have pressure problems?
I build all my loads seated to the shoulder neck junction and at least .010 jam into the lands. Works for me. ;D

It's my understanding that the ammo producers don't use canister powders, but instead use bulk powders that are unavailable to reloaders. They adjust the charge to whatever is need to get the pressure they want. I think Mason O gave you good advice. I'd get the chamber throat lengthened.

increased the pressure....
Vince, if you had weigh'd the powder when you took the bullets apart.. what i mite do is, to put the powder back in one or two cases a 0.5 grain less .. re seat the bullet to fit said chamber an try it checking for pressure signs..
also setting back the chamber isn't such a bad idea.. depending on what rate of twist the barrel is ?

Throat the barrel. Had you planned ahead, the chamber would have been freebored for that bullet length anyhow. When the barrel is "shot out", install a new one. This is not a particularly inexpensive hobby, but I venture to guess no more costly than golfing at the Country Club. ;D

Me again, thank all for your wise advise. I don't intend to purchase any more ammo, will reload only. I dumped the powder, only bought the Lapua ammo for the brass only. Would have been nice to be able to fire form the cases.

Will keep the the rifle as is. FYI, it is a rem 700 action, Pacific Tool bolt with Saco extractor, Shilen 26" barrel 1:8 twist cut .272, Timney trigger 2 - 10 oz and, McMillen Varmet glass bedded stock.

Again thanks all, Vince

Vince: If you are going to reload, then take a bullet seating depth (length) measurement with the bullet you plan on using. Anything the puts the full .243" diameter slightly in front of the neck/shoulder junction, with the bullet ogive touching the lands will be fine. My favorite bullet for my 8 twists 6BR's are the Berger 105 gr. #24428, with freebore length's of .080" to .104". I have a reamer with .050" FB, but that cuts it very close to the donut area, and I want to remain seated in front of that.

The FB could be lengthened using a throating only reamer, but it's very easy to end up with more extra length than you wanted. I've had it professionally done on several rifles, and always got a little more FB than I specified.
