6mm br

I am getting ready to bulid a ground hog gun. I long shot for me would be 400-500 yds. I would also like to load a bullet heavy enoff for a deer. I have a 700 rem short action. I want to do this right the first time. 10 twist or 12 . how long a barrel? I have a 12 twist on a 20" encor

The 10" twist will allow use of "certain" 90 grain bullets, and the distance you want makes more sense to go faster twist for more retained energy. I believe a 9" will get a 105 A-Max performing for you, but I`d opt for a 8.5" so I could shoot a nice weight variety. I`d go a #5 or heavier taper, depending on your weight goal. Heavier is better for cooling rate of fire, and accuracy. I go 26" on the length. You do not want you muzzle heavy on the bags, so it is very possible you may want to add lead inside the butstock to keep the rifle balanced on the bags.

how about a 9 twist and the sierra 100gr gameking bullets?? Just a thought. Lee

An 8 twist covers all your bases.

Barrel length and contour is kinda dependant on your stock and scope as a package deal.

Ditto on the 8 twist. My Hart & Krieger barrels do an excellent job with all bullet weights from the 68 gr. Berger to the 107 Sierra MatchKing.

An 8 twist will shoot up to 108 gr bullets and down to the light bullets. Buy it because you may choose to shoot a little farther than you are currently thinking. It also has a larger market in the unlikely event you should decide to sell it later.

The 8 twist will most certainly cover all bases, but i will share an experience i had with an 8 twist and light bullets. I had an 8 twist in 243Ai that shot great with the 107 sierras but it wouldnt shoot a 75gr v-max or the 65gr v-max or any other varmint bullet in that weight range worth a hoot!! 3/4" at best. Now 3/4" isnt anything to shy away from as it is pretty accurate, but not as accurate as i would have liked. That barrel would shoot the 107 in the 2's at 100 and 200 yards fairly regularly, not always, but pretty regularly! Walt Berger told a good friend of mine that when a fella goes to buy a barrel he must have an idea of what bullets he wants to shoot. He then said buy the slowest twist you can to stabilise that bullet. Now an 8 twist might do just dandy, but dandy isn't good enough for me any more. I bought a ppc and things havent been the same since! LOL!! Decide what it is you want to do with the rifle and build it accordingly. dual purpose rifles sound good in the beginning but sometimes they just dont work out. Plus it will give you another reason to buy or build a new stick. If you must have a dual purpose rifle, the 8 twist is probably best, like the boys said above! Good luck my friend!! Lee

After re-reading your post it sounds like deer and hog hunting is the idea behind the question. I would most certainly go with an 8 twist and shoot the heavy bullets, 90 gr being on the light side. the swift sirocco is a dam fine hunting bullet and i think they are 100gr??? The 105 vld hunting is another option. good luck!

Listen to the people that have had em....a 6mmBR with an 8" twist is a versital combo....from lil to big and shoots em well...there is a huge dif. between a 243/6mm AI with an 8 twist and a 6mmBR with one....the bbl length and weight will be determined by the length and heft of your stock...if it is a Rem factory stock you better keep it undr 26" ...if something custom wide/heavy/stable then it will take a full length varmint (LV-HV) blank (28 1/2" ) with ease.....dont build something that you cant shoot 105 class bullets at 500+ yds....just my opinion ,,the last advice I gave on here was called BS...take it for what it is worth....Roger

I had no choice at the time I started looking for a Savage F class, all I could find was a 12 twist 6BR. I have had people give give me VG info on the 6BR. I have to order some Fowler 80 grain boolits. I will in the future when I save up get me a 8 twist for the Savage. One question what is the best barrel length? I mainly hunt Hogs with it. Lou

I haven't heard one person mention the throat. If your reamer is cut for the 107 SMK & 105 Bergers or even the 100 BTs you are not going to get the lighter bullets anywhere near the lands. I just took a Shilen 1 in 10 off that would shoot everything up through the Sierra 100 Gameking FB. I just rebarreled to a 1 in 8 twist is 6BRX. Even the 95 VLD is just barely in the neck enough for my liking. Take your time deciding what will do the best job for you. Later! Frank

PS: Sorry I didn't notice the date on the last post. I will leave this for the next guy.

I think I would go with the 1 in 12, and a shorter throat to handle shorter bullets. For deer I think you could get away with a Nosler Partition 85 grain, stuffed deeper in the case. It should make the most of the energy you will get out of a 6BR. Could be close to the limit, but a 1 in 12 should stabilize it, as they are flat base. A 1 in 10 would be for sure, and would let you shoot the larger Nosler Partitions, but with some compromise to the lighter (shorter) varmint bullets.
