6mm BR vs 6mm Creedmoor

Hello shooters,
I am considering a new rifle build and have heard great things about both the 6mm br and the 6mm Creedmoor. This will primarliy be for PRS, CMP, and similar type matches though I might also like to use it for some varmint shooting.

To me, it seems like the 6mm Creedmoor is essentially a 6mm br with a greater range in reloading from large slow bullets to small and very fast so I am leaning towards 6mm Creedmoor.
Plus, 6mm Creedmoor is one of the most dominant cartridges in PRS and similar competitions so it is quite a proven performer.

Am I missing any important factors to consider in deciding between these two cartridges? Any and all input will be appreciated. What would you guys pick?

Thanks, Phillip

On paper the 6 Creedmoor takes 33% more powder to produce only a little bit more energy than 6BR. That has negative effects on barrel life and recoil. I chose 6BRA (or 6BR if factory chambered). Not sure why the CM would allow a wider range of bullets, really it depends a lot on freebore and barrel twist too.

Dgeesaman, that is a good point. I am in favor of longer barrel life and more efficient loads. +1 for the 6BR it seems.

Any idea as to why the 6mm CM outnumbers the 6mm BR in top PRS and NRL competitions? I am still fairly new to this sport and just trying to understand as much as I can.

Thanks!

I really like the 6br and the 6 Dasher even more. But for PRS type of shooting the creedmoor may be the way to go.

While a 6br can be made to feed from a magazine. A 6 creed is easier with less modifications to magazines.

6br you need either Lapua or Norma brass, where the Creedmoor you can get hornady. So it hurts less when you cant find brass after a stage.

Creedmoor Will get 2-300 more FPS than the BR so for making quick windcalls without sighters this is a plus. Yes it does come at the cost of powder and barrels but probably worth it.

Creedmoor you can also buy reasonably priced quality factory ammo. You're banging steel not shooting a benchrest match.

If I were building an F-class rifle 6BR/Dasher all day long but run and gun PRS Id look pretty hard at the Creedmoor

Remember, they try to beat a condition with speed but what do you give up to get it? accuracy... are you trying to shoot small groups at 600 or 1000 or hit a big old steel plate make your choice. I have pushed the Dasher to 3100 with a Spencer 103 and it turned a sub.1 gun to a 1/4 min. gun. Barrel life goes away quickly over 3000 in a 6mm....jim

6 Creedmoor feeds through a magazine more reliably, would be my guess.

I don't shoot pms, but shoot with a bunch of guys who do, and are VERY good. I see a lot of guys going back to BR/BRA/ DASHER, 22BR. mainly for barrel life. If you get serious about it, you'll be running A LOT of rounds both practice and matches.

6BR length cases require mods to AICS pattern mags to get them to feed properly. 6 Creedmoor works in standard mags flawlessly. There is no was they 6BR will e ver match the velocity of the 6 Creedmoor. The 6BR in a 26" barrel has to stretch to the limit hit 2900 FPS (most likely cannot make it) while the 6 Creedmoor can effortlessly do 3100+ from same length. That is with 105 grain bullets. No doubt the 6BR is more miserly for reloading since we're talking 30 or so grains of Varget for it versus 41-42 gr of RL16/H4350 for Creedmoor. But then one doesn't lose sleep over not finding all their Hornady 6 Creedmoor brass as the end of a stage in PRS.
I know very little about it at this point but take a look at the 6GT. It is supposed to be the latest & greatest hot-ticket for PRS. Barrel life (take this for what it's worth) is said to be 2500 rounds and counting. Plus it feeds in standard AICS mags.
My experience is both 6BR and 6 Creedmoor are pretty easy to tune excellent performing loads for.

I have read reports of 6BR not feeding well from a magazine very well. That may be a reason it is not used as much as the 6MM Creedmoor in PRS.

I guess you forgot one point ... how well does it shoot? Saw too many of the super expensive guns for PRS. go to a long range BR. match and leave with after they got beat soundly. They disregard all the thing it takes to to shoot small for speed and easier bolt cycling, they don't need a accurate rifle like Br.... so 3100 out of a Dasher is a quarter min. gun with 34 gr powder and 3100 with 42 gr. of powder is the cats a$$? I put be missing something....... jim

@PilotPhill
You shooting local or national PMS matches?
You want to burn the candle at both ends and replace you barrel at 1300rds +/-?
Do you think 200fps with help you beat a bad wind call at 800y (.2/10th difference)?
Do you think a 6 creed will help you on a ridiculous wobbly barricade?

It's really not and apples to apples comparison either. If you want to do well in PMS, you need to practice and practice a lot. Fancy calibers and equipment doesn't help. Top competitors that run barrel burners practice with other calibers like 223 and save the fast 6's for big matches.

For what it's worth, there is tons of info on the internet that is bad. I have been running 6BR repeaters for years. Are they perfect, no. Do they run and are they competitive, yes.

Dasher is king!
