6mm BR twist rate

I purchase a used rifle in 6mm AI that has had very few rounds fired in it and the barrel is in very good condition. It shoots 87 gr. V-Max bullets extremely well with its 1-12" twist. I would like to re-chamber it to 6mm BR to shoot lighter bullets and extend the barrel life for varmint shooting. Is this a reasonable endeavor with this barrel twist rate?

thanks,

Fred

Twist is no problem but do you have enough shank left to get a
total clean up on the old chamber?
Sounds like you might loose 2 or 3" ???

The barrel length is currently 26.5".
Barrel O.D. at action is 1.2".
Barrel O.D. 3" from action is 1.2".

Is finished barrel length of 23.5" long enough without loosing too much velocity?

I'm generally not a fan of rechambering used barrels.

While you have enough barrel to set it back, the costs are the same to chamber a new barrel as this one.

I'd consider either keeping the 6 Ackley as is, and getting a new barrel in 6BR and turn your gun into a switch barrel, or peddle the Ackley and put the funds into the new tube.

I would definately do it, especially if it is a custom LV contour barrel. A 1" setback is plenty to give you a new neck and throat. A 25.5" barrel is more than enough for a 6br.

I do find it odd that a 1-12 barrel will stabilize a 87gr Vmax, it may not after rechamber due to less velocity.

If you rechamber it, make sure you have the throat cut short enough to allow the lighter bullets to get to the lands.

Uh...why not? According to Sierra manual.

The shoulder on a 6br is .460", 6mmRem is .455" so were good here. Base to shoulder on 6mmrem is .692" longer than 6br. If a 6br reamer was ran in shoulder to shoulder it would also remove .058" of existing 6mmrem neck because of the 30* shoulder of the reamer. That leaves us with ..303" of old neck to remove. So...

.692" + .303" = .995"

But I would cut off another .100" to make sure..

So that would make you correct Alf! ;D

I was just saying 2-3" was WAY uneccesary.
