6MM BR Savage Rifle ????

Gentlemen,

I have purchased a Savage SS 12 action with a large barrel shank, did not know it was a large until after I received it) to build my project gun and the parts below are ordered. But I have a question about the barrel. I want a 26 in PAC Nor 6mm BR SS SM 3 groove barrel, 11* crown, 1.120 shank, no turn neck for Lapua brass. What barrel contour would you suggest, i am considering a factory varmint? I want to shoot 65gr to 95gr bullets at ranges from 100 - 300yrds. What barrel twist would be the best for those bullets?

Boyd's Varmint/target Stock
SSS recoil lug
SSS Tactical bolt handle
SSS Barrel blocks and wrench
SSS Trigger guard

Chuck,

I have a similar set-up. PacNor three-groove SuperMatch. I got the barrel 27" and asked for 4" straight tapering to about .900" at the muzzle. Very similar to a Krieger #17, but the full-diam end is smaller to fit the barrel nut.

If you plan to shoot the 95s, I would go no slower than a 1:9" twist. You may also consider going to 28" for a little extra velocity, though 26" will be more handy. Or you could compromise, as I did, at 27".

Chuck,
Welcome the forum. Your project gun sounds exciting. I love Savage rifles. If it were me, I would get an 8 twist to shoot the heavy,100 grain+) bullets. I have a new PAC-Nor heavy Pal ma that is chambered in a .243 that I am going to screw on in a couple of weeks. The heavy Pal ma looks pretty cool.

How long is it going to take Fred to time and true your action?

I got mine from Pac Nor at 28" fullbull and am glad I did. It is almost heavy enough to see my hits on prairie dogs every time. AM adding a muzzle brake so I can see it every time. It is an 8 twist.

Guys, I forgot to mention that I live in Louisiana and the only varmints to shoot are crows.

Chuckw2 - They did not give me a time frame for when I have to send my receiver to Fred, they said they would call and then I send it to them.

I was thinking of the Med Palma or the factory varmint. I do not think I need bigger than that for the crows and paper punching. What do you think?

Thank you for your replies

Well for your bullet weight range I would say........

65 - 95 for best velocity you will be safe with a 10 twist.
Though, the 8 twist will allow you to shoot ALL the bullets and really only give-up only about 80-100 fps over the 10 twist.

IF... you really stick with the light end of bullets for your paper punching / light skinned anumals endevors...
Then:

a 14 twist WILL shoot up to 70-75 gr bullets with EXCELLENT velocity and of corse accuracy.
I know because I have several and in particular have a couple Savages that sport ex-benchrest 14 twist barrels,Hart,Shilen,Kriegers)that have been set-back as a 6br for overall lengths of around 20-21 1/2. Velocity examples are 3250+
,REALLY!)from the AA Data 79 powder with 70 Speer TNT's. < .5moa.....Very deadly out to 300 yards!!! Heck and beyond 300.....;)
These shorty barrels DELIVER! compact and STIFF! Yes a little down on velocity, but really accurateand fast enough out to say 300 for sure! Take off Benchrest barrels are pretty frequently available for a song. Most shooters retire their Bench barrels <1500 rds and are taken care of well!
With a set-back of about an inch, you'll be far away from any heat checking that "may" be in the original throat. Life expectancy is at least another 1500+.

A 12 twist will get ya up to the 80-85 gr bullets {maby the 90gr FB}.....

Honestly, if ya want best flexability with your bullet weights then the 10 twist is really all ya need and you'll get good velocity.

Choises choises........Good luck and I'll bet yours will be a SHOOTER!

Thanks guy's for your advice, still cannot deceide on what twist to use. I guess I will probably go with an 8 twist, that way I can shoot any weight bullet. But I will probably go with a shorter barrel after reading some threads on this forum.
