6mm br savage 116 questions

For a while now I have been wanting to build my own gun for long range ground hog hunting. I am a machinist by trade and figured it would be a fun adventure. So I have been stopping at old gun shops and yard sales looking for a cheap mauser action or something to make into an accurate shooter.

I really like the 6mmbr and after studying it I believe it is what I need for the shots I will be taking. My typical long range shot is no further then 500 yds. Were I live it is too populated to get much further. So I figured that the 6mm br would be a good choice in caliber. Well yesterday I picked up a savage 116 in 25-06 cheap. It was a survivor of a house fire but was not in the fire itself. the outside of the barrel was etched from the water spray. The gun was not exposed to any considerable amount of heat because the plastic stock is not melted. we actually shot the gun a couple of times and after handing over money I felt pretty good about the purchase.

Now my question is. I have a extra long action that would be more suited for a 6.5-06 or something along them lines. I already have a 6.5-284 norma in a the exact same gun just newer. I was thinking about making a 25-06 ai and just having some fun with it before messing with barrels and such but would really like to make it a 6mm br or something similar. Can I use such a long action for this? I would like to have this together for next spring. anyone have any thoughts?

Let me know if you want some .25-06 brass. I have a box of 500 new Winchester unprimed that was bought about 12 years ago and never used.

It will work just fine. You should get a single shot adapter for it and get rid of the mag. Back in the day Savage only made long actions. Even the 223 was on a long action. I had a 6BR on a 112 single shot long action. It had an SSS 12 twist bbl.

The 25-06 is a great cartridge and I would mess with it for a while just to see how it will shoot. There used to be a savage site that had a ton of info but I don't know if it's still in existence.

I would take the gun apart COMPLETELY to make sure there are no water created issues left over inside the bolt or trigger assy.

well I started to tear down this rifle. The trigger assembly did need cleaned up and some heavy rust on some of the parts. I also scrubbed the bore to see if the original barrel was any good. I can still see some tooling marks on the lands so I doubt it has more then100 rounds down the barrel. The bore looks good no pitting or any problems. so I plan on remounting the gun in the stock mounting a proven scope and shooting some factory ammo to see if it is moa or close. anyone have any recommendations on some factory ammo?
