6mm br or 6mmx47 lapua

Hi guys I was hopping you could help me out. I have bin in contact with Snowy mountain rifle her in Montana about building a 6mm br. They said I might also strongly consider the 6mmx47L. I would use the rifle to shoot varmints and to out shoot all of my friends when we get together. Also was wondering about the 6mm br ability to take deer and antelope? I rarely shoot past 600yrds. How does the 6mmx57L compare to a 243 win? Also has any one have experience with snowy mountain rifle? Do you have any other gunsmiths to look into? Was also thinking of building the gun of a non custom action. What are your thoughts on good actions to build off of or is it better to have one built? This will be my first rifle build so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Jake

Build it on a Remington 700 action. The 6x47 Lapua is a great cartridge, we have used it to take whitetail deer and hogs here in South Texas. It dropped them on their tracks.

If hunting was not on the menu, the 6BR would serve you well.

I think the 243 is going to be harder on barrels. It's just more overbore.

You might also consider a 6 XC

The difference between a .243 / 6-47 and a 6XC on barrel life is the thing endless debates are made from. They are so close in powder capacity, performance, that barrel wear would be an insignificant factor... You MIGHT lose 300 or so rounds>>> if the rifle is used primarily for hunting, you will not notice the difference..

In that case I think I will get myself a 6mm br and my son a 243 win. So for the action Remington 700 one of the better actions to go with. Is there a good source for the 700 action or should I look for a used one. Also is there a big accuracy difference between a trued action and not. Like I said for varmints and out shooting friends is a trued action necessary. Would you recommend it.

When my gunsmith gets a factory rifle in to be "accurized" because the customer is not satisfied with his rifle, part of his regimen is to square and true the action up. He will NOT guarantee any increase in accuracy without the action work... That ought to say something..

Here is what I did... I looked around in pawn shops for an old completely beat-up Remington "stock / bluing" wise and offered almost nothing... Picked it up for a song and a dance and took everything off and kept the action... "About" 200bucks after initial purchase, you have a very nice action... Suggestion(s): 1.) get it cerakoted and 2.) buy a Jewell trigger. You will be glad you did on both points...

Oh I forget to add: IF you are going to use a small rifle primer cartridge in a Remington action, it would be nice to send the bolt to "Gray-Tan" to have it properly bushed so you don't get primer cratering... It is NOT necessary, just nice to have..

Remember, you do not have to do all this stuff all at once! Pay $35.00 or so to "fix" a Remington trigger>>> til you decide on a Jewell... You don't NEED to bush right away, or at all if you don't want.... BUT squaring and truing are really a must or your may very well be spinning your wheels..

You should check out the Deep Creek rifle club. They hold some great LOOOONG Range Shooting matches several times a year.

What kind of accuracy do you seek? I have a 6br on a stock 700 action, it is capable of groups in the 1.&.2s. I kind of have to disagree on having the action trued for a hunting rifle. I think a good barrel on a stock action will more than meet your accuracy requirements.

I would go with a 6x47 for the feeding and ejection benefits. I am doing one right know for those reasons.

Recon I'll throw my 2 cents in.

I have 3 6brs,

1-14 hunting rifle (trued 700, varmint taper) that has killed many a groundhog
1-14 XP-100 by Clay Spencer that will shoot accuracy wise between my hunting rifle and bench gun, this has also ruined a many a hogs day
1-8 1000yd light bench gun that has groups under 4"

The 6br is an amazing little dude, great accuracy and bullet selection in the light and heavy bullet range. Great varmint cartridge in a walking rifle setup or on a bench. Light recoil, I had a brake put on my 700 and I can see the while show. I know of a couple people that swear by them for pronghorns too.

Having said all that, I'm in the process of having a 6x47L built, while I love the br the 6x47L does have a little more umpf to it and I believe it can be a better all around rifle for where I live (east coast). I'm getting a 1-9 barrel on it knowing that I can run the 95s in it and also drop down to the 80s for varmints, going to try it but with the extra horse power I may be able to run some of the 105s, I know the 105 Amaxs will run and I might get the Bergers too but if not it's no big deal. I expect to get close to 3100 from the 95s and 3300 from the 80s. That may give me a little more range on a hog and the 95s at that speed are where I feel more comfortable taking a shot on a deer.

I just think that if I'm going to tote one gun that the 6x47L is going to be the better choice, the tad bit more power and feeding make up for the reduced barrel life but it is going to be a hunting gun after all.

...though I would never be without a 6br....or 2

Both rounds are very good as far as feeding I shoot the 6brx which is the 6br .100 longer for 1000 yd benchrest and love it so much i built one in a Varmit gun tac 30 stiller and i put Wyatt bottom metal in Clip feed same as used for the 308 you are not limited on your seat depth and it cylces through the gun flawlessy. I have shot countless yotes with it and Deer and speed goats no problem. i shoot the 105 berger at 3020fps works great. But then again either would be great.

Recon it's 3 cents now.

If you're on the fence about getting the action work done, it's worth it for amount of money it costs. Truing up the action and bolt face, lapping the lugs and cleaning up the threads almost gives you a custom action. It also gives you a solid foundation for the rifle. You're going to be dropping a nice chunk of change into a barrel and getting it chambered and fitted, might as well spend half of that cash on getting the action perfect.
